Scores: Amsterdam 20, Cologne (not aftershave) 15,
Frankfurt 31, Hamburg 14
Rhein 21, Berlin 13

Werner Hippler's first career two-point conversion wasn't enough to help Cologne to victory over defending champ Amsterdam yesterday. There still has not been only one tie game (Frankfurt and London [now Berlin] in the League's history. I went out on a limp (what else is new?) and picked Amsterdam / Cologne as a tie since I could not separate them on paper. It was however an important win for the Admirals, who I think will play Cologne for the NFL E ('AAA') Championship in Dusseldorf on May 27th. We'll see, I guess.

Rushing star Robinson honored for 150-yard day; Fire hero Fontenot named Defensive Player of Week

FRANKFURT Galaxy rusher ROGER ROBINSON has been named NFL Europe Offensive Player of the Week following his outstanding display while leading his team to victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils on Saturday night. Robinson, allocated by the Arizona Cardinals, gained 150 yards on 23 carries (6.5-yard average) and scored on a 34-yard run during Frankfurt’s 31-14 win. The speedy halfback also added 3 receptions for 26 yards.

After two weeks of action, Robinson has a 99-yard lead over his nearest rival at the top of the NFLEL rushing charts having gained 253 yards on 49 carries (5.2-yard average). He also leads the league in combined yards from scrimmage with 279 (253 rushing, 26 receiving).

Robinson said: “It feels good to be leading the league in rushing right now, but it’s early. We’re only two games into it and we have eight to go. If I’m on top after Week 10, then I’ll feel real good.” Green Bay Packers-allocated cornerback THERRIAN FONTENOT was named Defensive Player of the Week after he helped the league-leading Rhein Fire defense shut out the Berlin Thunder en route to a 22-0 victory.

Fontenot recorded 3 tackles, 3 passes defended and 2 interceptions, with the first crucial pick coming in his own end zone at the start of the second half. His second interception at Berlin’s 41-yard line was returned 10 yards and set up the Fire’s final touchdown of the game, giving the visitors a 19-0 advantage. Through two games, Fontenot jointly leads NFL Europe with 2 interceptions and leads the Fire with 4 passes broken up.

Special Teams Player of the Week honors went to Amsterdam Admirals cornerback JUSTIN PERKINS, whose 72-yard return of a blocked field goal for a touchdown helped his team to a 20-15 victory over the Cologne Centurions. Perkins, of the Kansas City Chiefs, also recorded 2 special teams tackles, 5 defensive stops and 2 passes defended as the Admirals evened their record at 1-1. English wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY was named National Player of the Week for his efforts during the Hamburg Sea Devils’ 31-14 defeat at the hands of the Frankfurt Galaxy.

McCready caught a team-high 8 passes for 95 yards and became just the third player in NFLEL history to top 150 career receptions, taking his total to 151 – good enough for joint-second place in the all-time rankings alongside former Barcelona Dragons tight end Demetrius Davis (1991-1992, 1995-1996). McCready also broke Hamburg’s all-time receptions mark, taking his total in a Sea Devils uniform to 47, surpassing the mark of 42 set by Chris Collins in 2005.  The former New England Patriots wide receiver won three Player of the Week awards in 2005.

From Neil Reynolds at NFLE Media "
National player trio make league history; Campbell named Offensive Player of Week"

FOR the first time in league history, three home-grown national players have earned NFL Europe League Player of the Week prizes following their outstanding efforts in Week One.

French linebacker PHILIPPE GARDENT became the first national player to win the Defensive Player of the Week prize as he recorded a team-high 12 tackles during the Cologne Centurions’ 14-10 defeat of the Hamburg Sea Devils.

The fourth-year linebacker said: “This is really just my second season in NFL Europe because I was hurt in 2003 and 2004 but I am beginning to understand everything that happens on the field. I feel I am a much better player this year and it felt great to help the team get off to such a good start in Hamburg.” Japanese wide receiver NORIAKI KINOSHITA, now in his second season in NFL Europe, was named Special Teams Player of Week One as he scored on a 59-yard punt return to spark a late Amsterdam Admirals revival during a 33-29 loss to the Berlin Thunder. The native of Osaka, Japan, also returned 3 kickoffs for 56 yards, added 1 reception for 13 yards and gained 2 yards on a wide receiver reverse.

Rookie Mexican wide receiver JUAN WONG was chosen as National Player of the Week after he caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from fellow wideout Chris Samp on the Rhein Fire’s first play of the new season. Wong, who ended the night with a team-high 66 receiving yards on 2 catches during Rhein’s 10-6 victory over Frankfurt, said: “I just ran my route but I didn’t know I was so wide open. I just saw the ball and caught it. That is what I am supposed to do – I do this for a living now.”

Offensive Player of the Week honors went to Berlin Thunder quarterback LANG CAMPBELL, who was allocated to NFL Europe by the Cleveland Browns. Campbell looked a model of efficiency during his team’s 33-29 defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals, completing 16 of 26 passes (61.5 percent) for 139 yards and 1 touchdown. His touchdown strike covering 27 yards to wide receiver Rich Musinski gave Berlin an early 14-0 lead.

With the Thunder needing to run out the clock inside the two-minute warning, Campbell came up with one of his most important throws of the evening as he calmly hit wide receiver Lance Moore for a 13-yard gain on third-and-four. That allowed Berlin to run the remaining seconds off the clock and emerge victorious.
After the opening round of NFLEL games, Campbell leads the league with an 88.5 passer rating but aims to improve in the coming weeks, stating: “It’s always nice to win the first one and set the tone for the rest of the season. I thought we did a lot of good things. I saw a lot of positives out there, but there are some mistakes that we need to fix. There is room for improvement.”

From Moose "NFL Europe Game Kickoff Preview this weekend!"
Cologne @ Homburg. My Pick: Cologne by 11. Werner Hippler could set as many as five records this weekend as the Centurians take on the Sea Dragons on the road. For Hamburg, they better hope they can keep a very good pass rush of Cologne's out of the face of James Killian (Houston), who starts @ QB. If he can throw 9 or 10 passes to brit WR Scott McCready, Hamburg has a chance. If not, it's to bad Hipp will set the following records on the road: Most career games played by an NFL E player in career (89), most seasons played in NFL E (10), most catches and TDs for a TE in NFL E career (Hipp will add to those marks he already holds. In addition, he holds the marks for most games played in both Cologne and Frankfurt's club histories, already).

Frankfurt @ Timmy Chang's Rhein Fire (Note: World Bowl XIV will be in Dussledorf, home of the Rhein Fire, Saturday, May 27th). Moose's Pick: Frankfurt by 1 or 2. Timmy Chang may not start - yet, but he will play. He is allocated by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was cut by Arizona and Detroit last August and assigned to Philly's practice squad, where he may end up again this year - hanging on to a Pro QB job by the skin of his finger nails like Nick Rolovich (Ar.FL) and Shawn Withy-Allen (currently a H.C., if you can believe that, in Af2). It won't be pretty for Chang or Dallas allocated Drew Henson (what is it with these baseball player- QB converts and the Cowboys, who keep sending them to NFL E?) if Danny Benetka gets to them early. Benetka is back after a one-yr layoff and is hungry for QB sacks.

Berlin @ Defending Champ Amsterdam. Well - we'll see if their is life after Jarrett Payton, eh? Seattle allocated Gibran Hamdan gets his absolute last chance to prove he can play QB in the NFL 'AAA's. If the Admirals can repeat, it'll be on his shoulders unless Jared Allen (not Flint!) is ready, which it didn't seem like in training camp in Tampa.

My pick.  Amsterdam by six (which is german for 'sex', or is it the other way around). Oh guess who starts for Berlin @ QB? Miami's allocated Brock Berlin. Who says the jerries don't have a sense of humour?" Moose

WORLD BOWL RE-MATCH KICKS OFF 14TH SEASON;  OLD RIVALS MEET AGAIN; SEA DEVILS KICK OFF AT HOME

THE long wait is over and the NFL Europe League is ready to roar back into action with its 14th season kicking off on March 18. And for the second year in a row, the new campaign will kick off with a re-match of the previous World Bowl match-up as the Berlin Thunder aim to seek revenge for last June’s title game loss to the Amsterdam Admirals. Also in Week 1, the long and storied Deutschland Derby rivalry resumes as the Rhein Fire plays host to the Frankfurt Galaxy. The 2006 season gets underway with the Cologne Centurions paying a visit to the Hamburg Sea Devils, who will look to build on a promising 2005 campaign. With a grueling training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida, completed, it is time for the talking to stop and the battle for a championship to begin. The road to Yello Strom World Bowl XIV in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Saturday May 27 begins in earnest this weekend. Who will emerge as championship material? Only time will tell.

Coaches focused on opening weekend following training camp warm-up in Florida

AFTER spending three weeks turning a group of total strangers into a team during preseason training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida, the six NFL Europe League head coaches are busy putting the finishing touches to their preparations ahead of this weekend’s opening night action. And after enjoying some of the finest weather Florida had to offer – which meant no important preseason practice time was lost - the players and coaches jetted into sub-zero temperatures and snow flurries across Germany and the Netherlands last week. Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: “One of our main issues was transferring from sunny Tampa to the snowstorms in the Netherlands.” Frankfurt Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES added: “This is the first time since I have been coaching over here that I have flown in and it’s snowing. It was sitting there on the ground waiting for us but it’s not that bad.” Despite a chilly reception, all six teams know there is a great deal to play for in the coming weeks and months and are remaining focused on their ultimate goal – to lift the famous World Bowl trophy in Düsseldorf’s LTU arena on Saturday May 27.

Admirals head coach Andrus leads his team into the defense of its title with a World Bowl re-match against the Berlin Thunder on opening night. He says: “I think we’ve had a real good camp but we’re only just starting. Some players tend to think they don’t have to be on top of their game any more because they have made the team but nothing could be further from the truth. “Although it is a new season with new players, I’m pretty sure Berlin will be eager to come out and play. They’re facing the reigning World Bowl champions. It’s going to be an interesting fight.”

Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ is aiming to guide the club to a third successive World Bowl appearance under his tutelage and says: “We haven’t had any complaints about the fact that it’s cold and snowy. This is more of an evolving football team than the two I have had previously, so we’ll see how it’s going to be. “We got the guys we wanted so they have to play up to their level of capability. We have to coach up to our level of capability. That’s going to be the test to see if both of those things happen.” After assuming the role of head coach during the preseason, Cologne’s DAVID DUGGAN has quickly adapted to life at the top, saying: “It was difficult to let some quality players go at the end of training camp but that’s the nature of the business. “It was a very successful preseason and I am confident going forward with the players that we have. I was happy with the intensity and aggressiveness that this team showed throughout training camp and I’m excited about the season. We have enough talent to do some very good things in NFL Europe." Entering his third season in Frankfurt, Galaxy head coach Mike Jones will be keen to lead the Men in Purple to a record seventh appearance in World Bowl. On the eve of the new campaign, the former NFL wide receiver says: “We had a decent training camp and we came out injury free. Our offensive line did a great job in camp and we ran the football pretty well.

Defensively, without question, we are much faster than in previous years and the players are anxious to get out there and show what they can do.” Veteran NFLEL head coach JACK BICKNELL will kick off a 14th season in the league – and a second in charge of the Hamburg Sea Devils – by playing host to the Cologne Centurions in Week 1. Looking to reach World Bowl for the first time since he took the Barcelona Dragons to the championship game in 2001, Bicknell says: “I am looking forward to the start of the season. Every year, we get excited about playing these games.

“The biggest challenge is getting settled and into a routine. Once we are in a routine, we will be ready to play. I think we are going to have a good team.

NFLEL ANNOUNCES SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH YELLO STROM FOR WORLD BOWL

THE NFL Europe League’s championship game is to be sponsored by Yello Strom for the second year running, the NFLEL announced today.

Yello Strom World Bowl XIV will be played in Düsseldorf’s LTU arena on May 27, as part of a new agreement with the national brand of one of Germany’s largest energy providers, EnBW (Energie Baden-Wuertemberg). Yello Strom was also the sponsor of World Bowl XIII.

JIM CONNELLY, Managing Director of NFL Europe, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome back Yello Strom as title sponsor of World Bowl XIV. We have been able to build on the relationship that was developed during their sponsorship of last year’s game and have already progressed negotiations for future years.

“A deal like this demonstrates the importance of World Bowl in the European sporting calendar. With the fantastic support and enthusiasm of Yello Strom, we look forward to creating a great occasion this year.”

MARTIN VESPER, General Manager of Yello Strom, said: “We are very excited to be part of World Bowl again. It was a great event last year and there was a tremendous atmosphere in the stadium. We are looking to turning the LTU arena yellow on World Bowl day and being part of a memorable final."

Connelly also paid tribute to other major sponsors of the NFL Europe League, saying: “We are very lucky to have outstanding partnerships again this year with Skoda and Citigroup, as well as many team sponsors on the local level. This all shows the commercial value of the NFL Europe League.”

Düsseldorf, which staged last year’s World XIII triumph of the Amsterdam Admirals over the Berlin Thunder, will become the first city to host four World Bowls, having also been the venue in 1999 and 2002.

JOACHIM ERWIN, Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, said:  “To host the World Bowl for the fourth time is a very special honor for our city. The NFLEL has decided to stage the World Bowl at the LTU arena for the second year in a row and we in Düsseldorf regard that as a huge award.

“This honor demonstrates that  LTU arena matches the highest international standards, with outstanding organization and infrastructure. We consider that Düsseldorf is the capital city of American football in Europe and, certainly, I would be delighted if the Rhein Fire wins Yello Strom World Bowl XIV on May 27.”

Yello Strom World Bowl XIV is expected to be aired around the world in more than 150 countries, including a live audience in the United States on the NFL Network. Germany’s number one network, ARD, will air a same-day highlights package, while the championship game can be seen live in Germany and Europe on NASN, the North American Sports Network.

As well as the game itself, World Bowl week will feature many build-up events in Düsseldorf. In addition, World Bowl will feature the culmination of a season-long series of league-wide competitions to find the NFLEL’s best fans, cheerleaders, entertainment acts, journalists and photographer.

SAMMY SCHMALE, General Manager of the Rhein Fire, explained: “Although World Bowl XIV is in Düsseldorf and hosted by the Rhein Fire, we want to bring all elements of the whole league together to celebrate the climax of our season. The triumphant team in World Bowl will not be the only winners – we aim to honor the many different groups who have played such an important role in the success of World Bowl and the NFLEL for many years. There will also be some great prizes to be won on the day of World Bowl by fans in the stadium.”

Information about the first NFLEL Journalism Awards were announced today (see accompanying release), with details of other competitions scheduled to be announced in the near future.

The 2006 NFLEL season kicks off on March 18, when the Admirals and Thunder meet in a World Bowl XIII rematch in Amsterdam, the Fire host long-time rival Frankfurt Galaxy and the Cologne Centurions travel to the Hamburg Sea Devils.
