Northwind the Canadian National Team Head Coaches selected for the 2011 International campaign. From AFL Canada President Darrel Perry!

On behalf of the AFL Canada Executive and the National Team Selection Committee, I would like to formerly announce the appointment of Jaye Macumber and Stuart Grills as joint Northwind Head Coaches.

Stuart Grills - Has 24+ years of playing and coaching experience in Australia, Canada and the US. Highly respected across North America, Stuart is one of the most experienced players and coaches in North America with a division one US Nationals title under his belt. He is a founding member of BC Footy and will provide a direct link to the developing group of teenage players itching for a chance to play for Canada.

Jaye Macumber - Celebrated his 2nd year as Toronto Central Blues Coach with an OAFL Grand Final win and awarded OAFL Coach of the year. After a playing career in Australia and then with the Central Blues in Toronto, Jaye has the confidants of the current Northwind squad and is rewarded for being Northwind Assistant Coach since 2009.

The selection committee would like to thank the other applicants and the current Northwind playing squad for their patience during this very important selection. Both Stuart and Jaye have taken some time to consider the commitment required for this position prior to accepting the offer. The AFLC Executive together with the Northwind Management team look forward to a successful 2011 campaign to Australia.

From Sun Oct 3. OAFL, Ontario Australian Football League Grand Final, Central Blues 7-2 = 44 defeated Toronto Dingos 3-8 = 26 in Toronto. A report by Ottawa Swans, Michael "Fingers" Beall!
"I thought I'd tell you how the OAFL Grand Final went. It ended in a draw; just kidding, the Central Blues won. It was a rainy and chilly day, but the grounds at Humber College South were well peppered with fans. They had live play-by-play and a barbeque with bar. They even hosted a sprint-race at half time.

The game itself was entertaining. The Dingos sure had the Blues on the ropes most of the game, but the Dingos never had the lead. The Blues were just too strong on turnovers and capitalized quickly and often on Dingos mistakes. The Dingos took awhile to gain their courage back, a problem that resulted a few times in two or three quick goals by the Blues. Still, the Blues were strong and quick, well disciplined, and wore the mighty Red and Black (as Myk knows I'm a Essendon Bombers fan) down to a convincing 7.2 = 44 to 3-8 = 26 victory.

I've got to tell you, it was pretty encouraging to see those guys play and see where a team can get to in only five years, the Blues. With some strong commitment to recruiting and building support, I think the Ottawa Swans can get to that level too." Michael "Fingers" Beall.

Fingers thanks for the report. Fingers currently plays for the Ottawa Swans. He went to Australia several years ago and fell in love with Australian Rules Football and the Essendon Bombers. You can see Fingers in Parts 2 and 4 of my recent Ottawa Swans vs High Park Demons MYKwebTV shows. Click here

In the SANFL Grand Final, Central District Bulldogs 10-11 = 71 defeated Norwood Redlegs 9-11= 65! This was the Bulldogs 9th Premiership in 11 years!

From Sat Oct 2. Collingwood Magpies 16-12 = 108 defeated the Saint Kilda Saints 7-10 = 52, to win the 2010 AFL Grand Final replay. Last weeks AFL Grand Final was a draw!
In a average Grand Final replay, the Magpies were well up at 1/2 time by 27 points after the Saints kicked horribly for goal in the 1st half. At half time it was Magpies 6-5 = 41 to Saints 1-8 = 14.

The Magpies then went further infront in the 3rd quarter to lead 11-8 = 74 to 4-9 = 33 at 3/4 time. Congratulations to the, on this occasion not the "Collie Wobbles".
I know Chris Freeman the coach of the Delta Bayhawks, who are the reigning BC Footy, Western Canada Premiers, is a very happy man right now as he is also a huge Magpie fan.

From Thurs Sept 30. The AFL Grand Final between the Collingwood Magpies
and the Saint Kilda Saints was a draw! The game will be replayed this Saturday/late Friday night North American time!

What a great game it was, Collingwood Magpies 9-14 = 68 to Saint Kilda Saints 10-8 = 68. This is the 3rd time that there has been a draw in the AFL Grand Final.

I hope the AFL gives more money to International Aussie Rules Football as a result of the many millions of dollars extra they make this Saturday, as approximately 100,000 fans will again be at the game.

In the SANFL Grand Final, it's Norwood Redlegs vs Central District Bulldogs!
Nowood defeated Woodville West Torrens in the Preliminary Final, 8-8 = 56 to 7-9 = 51. They will take on the reigning premiers and the power house of the SANFL over the past decade, the Central District Bulldogs.

Central District Bulldogs will be going for their 4th SANFL Premiership in a row. They have been in every SANFL Grand Final since 2000, winning 8. An amazing effort.

South Gawler Lions Senior Colts (pictured above) win Back to Back Premierships in the BL&GFA Grand Final!
What a great win it must have been, as the South Gawler Lions defeated Barossa Districts 20-12 = 132 to 3-6 = 24. I'll be mentioning this great win, this week on 5AA with Jeff Burzacott. Refer above for details to listen on 5AA or online.

Dominant Lions by Aaron Bain.
SOUTH GAWLER senior colts demonstrated their dominance all season in rounding out an impressive season going back to back premiers with a 108 point victory over a gallant Barossa Districts.

South came out with a point to prove and did so in kicking four opening quarter goals to the Bulldogs single.  The Lions applied the blow torch in the second quarter to kick away and have the game all but sealed away at the major break with a 45 point lead. The Lions made the most of the premiership quarter kicking another four goals while holding Barossa to only the one point and setting up a relaxing last quarter. Barossa kept coming at the Lions in little surges kicking two last quarter goals while the destined premiers piled on an astonishing eight majors to run away with a relentless victory.

South Gawler coach Steve Nicolai was very pleased with the outcome and the way the lads responded after their loss in the second semi final. ‘The boys held their structure really well and for each other all day’ expressed Nicolai ‘I am immensely proud of the way we responded from the loss two weeks before and to finish off the season and looking forward to a bright future at the club’.

Best players for the Lions included classy midfielder and Dean Tobitt medalist Michael Gajewski, live wire forwards Rowan Whenan and Travis Head who both contributed with five majors. Special mention must be made to Daniel Goulding who managed to rise to the sky and comfortably take the ‘Senior Colts Mark of the Year’.

d
Best players for the Bulldogs were ruckman and all round talented sportsman Jack Madgen, midfielder Andrew Thwaites and key defender Josh Hanley who also had a run through the midfield late. By Aaron Bain

It's the Collingwood Magpies vs Saint Kilda Saints in this Saturdays/Friday night CDN and USA time, AFL Grand Final!

A weekend of Aussie Rules Football men's and women's in Montreal!
After attending the CFL BC Lions vs Montreal Alouettes game on Friday night in Montreal I then on Saturday watched the Edmonton Emu's womens team play the Montreal women's team in a 7+ a side game. Then on the Sunday I watched 3 Montreal men's teams play in 7+ a side games. It was a fun time and I was impressed with the growth of Aussie Rules Footy in Montreal.

It was also great to see the ladies from Edmonton and 2 from Calgary make the trip to Montreal for some footy. I enjoyed a great Saturday night out with many of the people that were at the games. For some reports and pictures check out the Montreal Saints site Click here

Right: Jonathan "Sherman" Lajeunesse of the Ottwaw Swans with the ball in action recently in Toronto. Sherman in his 1st year of playing Aussie Rules Footy made my best players this week. Refer to the Toronto Rebels vs Ottawa Swans report below.

OAFL, Ontario Canada, the Broadview Hawks 13-15 = 93 defeated the Ottawa Swans 7-3 = 45!
Q1 Hawks 6-5 = 41. Swans 1-0 = 6.
Q2 Hawks 7-10 = 52. Swans 5-1 = 31.
Q3 Hawks 8-12 = 60. Swans 7-2 = 44.
Q4 Hawks 13-15 = 93. Swans 7-3 = 45.

Swans goals came from; Luke Walsh 3, Corey "Legend" Bowen 2, Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz, Mike "Hoges" Kozlowski.
Swans best players I gave to; Yaser Abou Elenein, Ryan "Razor" Gregory, Chris "Rookie" Lockhart, Darren Roffey, Luke Walsh, Jay Goldhawk.

Umpired by Danny Bernstein for the 6th week in a row the Ottawa Swans got to play at the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. Again this week the Swans had some good quarters but could not put a full game together. On a positive note it was the Swans highest score of the year.

From Sun July 4. On Canada Day Canada Northwind 8-2 = 50 were just defeated by the Ontario Aussie Allstars 11-4 = 70!
This was a great effort by Northwind which is the all Canadian National team. I've been here in Ottawa now for 6 weeks and have seen many excellent Australian players playing for the Toronto and area based teams, 6 only Australians allowed on the field at once. I believe in most other years the Aussie Allstars have been convincing winners over Northwind. This game is obviously great preparation for the Northwind team 4 weeks before their game against USA Revolution which is the USA National team. Emile Studham the new Northwind coach emailed me last night very happy with the effort and that Northwind nearly won the game.

With some excellent players now coming through the British Columbia Western Canada Footy Junior system Northwind have a good chance on improving in the 2011 International Cup on their 6th finish at the 2008 International Cup. Tasos Dimacakos who was named 2nd best player for Northwind told me today that if the guys in the the Northwind team from British Columbia played on Canada Day they may have won. For a excellent report check out oafl.ca

OAFL, the Guelph Gargoyles 7-14 = 56 defeated the Ottawa Swans 5-3 = 33 to win the Canada Day Cup. The Swans have a 5 goal last quarter!
For the 5th week in a row the Ottawa Swans got to play at the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. Saturday was a special day as it was the 3rd Canada Day Cup between these two teams. The Gargolyles won in 08 while the Swans won in 09. On Canada Day in 2007 the Swans hosted the Blues in the very first Canada Day Cup in Ottawa. The Swans won this game.

On Saturday it was a warm sunny day with a strong wind. The Gargoyles got off to a good start with the wind leading at quarter time 3-8 = 26 to Swans 0-1 = 1. The Swans did not make use of the wind in the 2nd quarter and trailed 5-9 = 39 to 0-1 = 1 at 1/2 time. During the 2nd quarter something quite funny happened. Brian Dunkin the umpire who came from Toronto for the game sent the Gargolyes runner off the field and told him he can't return. Apparently he was complaining at the umpires decisions and even yelling at him. I thought Brian did a excellent job umpiring on his own on Saturday. The 3rd quarter saw the Gargolyes get further in front leading 7-14 = 56 to 0-3 = 3 at 3/4 quarter time.

At 3/4 quarter time the Gargolyes coach told his players that they were not to let Swans score a goal. Then Wow! The Swans had a great final quarter with the wind kicking 5 goals. 2 of these goals came from Corey "Legend" Bowen, 2 came from Mike Hogan and 1 from Luke Walsh in his 1st game back after a serious foot injury. Best players for the Swans I gave to Darren Roffey, Mike "Hoges" Kozlowski, Jay Goldhawk, Ryan "Razor" Gregory who also played in Ruck on Thursday for the Canadian Northwind team, Mike Rushton and Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz.

The Canada Day Cup was presented to Jason Fox the captain of the Gargoyles by Swans committeeman Rob Perade. The Gargolye players then joined the Swans for food and drinks more presentations at the Geogetwon Pub and then many of the players and friends from both teams headed out to the same club, Patty Bolands for a great night.

From Mon June 28. OAFL, the Toronto Rebels 12-11 = 83 defeated the Ottawa Swans 2-2 = 14!

For the 4th week in a row the Ottawa Swans got to play at the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. The game was umpired by former Toronto Eagles player Danny Bernstein. The Swans had a good 1st quarter with the score at quarter time being the Rebels 4-1 = 25 to the Swans 2-0 = 12. Again this week the Swans had a disappointing 2nd quarter and then 2nd half. Best players for the Swans. Best I gave to Ryan "Razor" Gregory the Swans captain in ruck. This week Razor took many more marks around the ground and put in a excellent 4 quarter effort. Darren Roffey was again good this week once moved from centre half forward. Corey "Legend" Bowen had another good game in the centre. Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz across half forward had some good possessions and battled all day. Chris "Rookie" Lockhart in the backlines had another good game and against another good opponent. Jonathan "Sherman" Lajeunesse pictured above a 1st year player I was really impressed with. He battled hard all day getting some good possessions. As I said to him after the game, he was really close to getting many more possessions and it will come as he continues to improve and learn the game. Goalscorers for the Swans were Curley and Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz.

From Wed June 23. Talking some Intl Ausse Rules footy this week on 5AA at 8.30pm Sth Australian time!
I'm on at a different time this week as the host Jeff Burzacott fills in for Bob Francis at a earlier timeslot. 8.30pm Thursday night Sth Australian time which will be 7.00am Thursday Eastern CDN and USA time. Listen Live 5AA.com.au

OAFL, the Central Blues defeat the Ottawa Swans!
The Ottawa Swans got to play for the 3rd week in a row at the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. Yesterday the Central Blues from Toronto currently in 2nd position in the OAFL fielded a strong side and ran out convincing winners over the Swans 14-13 = 97 to 2-3 = 15. Again this week the Aussie onballers for the Blues were way to strong for the Swans. This week I again saw improvment from the Swans 1st year players. Best players for the Swans. Aussie Darren Roffey had a huge 1/2 half to be clearly the best. 1st year Canadian player Alex Anglin on a wing had a great 3 quarters before missing the last quarter with a shoulder injury. Alex has been in the best players in all 4 games he has played. Dave Martin a Aussie in his 1st year ever playing Australian Rules Football had a good game on the wing. Yaser Abou Elenein the rover in his 1st game after having a cast removed from his arm this week got many possesions. Chris "Rookie" Lockhart in defence, Ryan "Razor" Gregory in ruck and Jake Plunkett-Latimer in defence also had good games. Goal scorers for the Swans were Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz and Steve Monk. At the Swans awards presentations at the Georgetown Pub on Saturday night Yaser Abou Elenein spoke highly of the Central Blues as a club. For a report on Ottawaswans.com

My response to The Phantom's comments about me in his Rd 6 report on OAFL.ca. Ottawa Swans V’s  Central Blues RCR – 2:00pm
From the Phantom's report. ".......Now apparently they’ve pick up another Aussie from out west, “Mkye Aussie” as he’s known to everyone. Unfortunately I don’t see a middle age footy player making much of a difference for the Swannies." The Phantom.

Well I suppose any publicity is good right? So thanks for the comments Phantom. You may well be correct in saying "Unfortunately I don’t see a middle age footy player making much of a difference for the Swannies." I presume you are talking about my upcoming on field performances? It was never my aim to be playing regularly this year for the Swans. It was my aim to join the Swans and help the team in other ways and after training for 2-3 weeks "maybe" play for the Swans.

It has been a absolute pleasure to join a club where 95% of the players are Canadian and incrediably keen at the twice a week training sessions and on game days. With Swans Champ Aussie Luke Walsh injured we currently have 2 experienced Aussies on the field and thus each week struggle against the Toronto teams with 6 excellent Aussies. Every Canadian guy is keen to learn our great game and it has been fun to help the guys at the trainings and on game days. Canadian coach Chris MacLean although frustrated with the recent results is extremely prepared and professional at trainings and on game days.

After being hit good in the game against the High Park Demons in Toronto 3 weeks ago I have every day for 3 weeks thought about never playing Aussie Rules Footy again. But very importantly because there is "Not 1 Aussie ego" in the club and the Canadian guys have been incrediably welcoming I will again play at some stage in 2010 for the Swans. Hopefully I can prove The Phantom wrong in regards to being a non onfield difference. I believe I made a excellent decision to move to Ottawa from Calgary and be part of the OAFL, Ontario Australian Football League which is one of the largest Aussie Rules Football Leagues outside of Australia. Moving up and forward with the Swans now my number 1 OAFL team for life. For The Phantoms Rd 6 report check out oafl.ca For a recent report about my arrival in Ottawa check out the the article on the excellent ottawaswans.com

Picture from the recent BCAFL, British Columbia Australian Football League 10th Anniversary Ball. Some great CDN Footy guys and mates.

From left: Jason Stratford, Peter Campion, Colin Hilton, Stuart Grills, Mike McFarlane, Duncan McFarlane.

The BCAFL, British Columbia Australian Football League recently had their 10th Anniversary Ball. The men pictured above have done a incrediable amount of work over the past 10 years in forming and running the successful BCAFL including the junior competition.

From Mr BC Footy Stuart Grills. "Myk it's Duncan McFarlane on the far right. He and I had the very first meeting way back in 2000 and he suggested that I start a footy team, the rest as they say is history! Interesting fact he is Mike McFarlane's Dad (obviously) but he is also related to Bob Skilton. He was the connection to Port Melbourne, his brother "Darky" McFarlane was the secretary of Port for over 30 years. A real footy administrator legend! Cheers." Stuart Grills.

Check out the "AFL Footy MYKwebTV" menu above for many MYKwebTV shows from the BCAFL.

From Mon June 14. OAFL, the Hamilton Wildcats defeat the Ottawa Swans!
At the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa the Ottawa Swans started well against the Hamilton Wildcats. The more experienced Wildcats however ran out convincing winners 16-17 = 113 to 3-4 = 22. The Swans currently having only 2 experienced Australians on the field makes it difficult as each week the opposition teams have 6 experienced Australians playing on the field at any time which is the rule in the OAFL. The commitment on the field by the Swans is excellent and the numbers at Tuesday and Thursday nights training sessions are excellent. Best for the Swans were Aussies Darren Roffey and Corey Bowen (pictured above) while 3rd best I gave to Canadian Marc "Smitty" Magierowicz. For a detailed report also check out OttawaSwans.com

From Mon June 7. OAFL, the Toronto Dingos 10-19 = 79 defeated the Ottawa Swans 4-3 = 27 in Ottawa. It was a improved effort by the Swans!

At the magnificent Rideau Carleton Raceway the Ottawa Swans took on the Toronto Dingos. The game being umpired by the experienced David "Canoe" Heward who is based in Toronto but from Australia. The Swans got off to a good start and at quarter time the score was Dingos 2-6 = 18 to the Swans 2-1 = 13. The Swans goals came from Darren Roffey and Curley. 1/2 way through the 2nd quarter the Swans tied up the game 3-1 = 19 to the Dingos 2-7 = 19. Although appearing frustrated I believe Swans coach Chris MacLean was much happier with the Swans effort at this stage of the game than in previous weeks.

The 2nd half saw the Dingos take a handy lead with the 3/4 time score being Dingos 7-14 = 56 to Swans 4-2 = 26. Then in the last quarter the Dingos continued to play well running out winners by 51 points. Along with some good Canadians several of the Dingos Australian players lead by #12 Dingos President and 2004 OAFL MVP Craig Stewart, #21 the coach Mike McFarlane and #29 Chris Buczkowski were excellent
. My best players for the Swans were Northwind representative Chris "Rookie" Lockhart, Corey "Legend" Bowen, Darren Roffey, Curley, Ryan "Razor" Gregory, Chris "Rock" Peck and Alex Anglin. It was great that the Dingos players joined the Swans at the Georgetown Pub for dinner, beers and the awards before heading out for the night in downtown Ottawa.

BL&GFA, the South Gawler Lions 14-11 = 95 defeated arch rivals the Willaston Donneybrooks 9-9 = 63!
I was happy waking up Saturday morning here in Ottawa to read this great result on sportingpulse.com.

The Adelaide Crows 16-9 = 105 surprisingly defeated the Fremantle Dockers 12-10 = 82!
I believe the Crows have cost me a point in the South Gawler Lions and the BC Footy football tips every week this year.

Canadian Mike Pyke leads way for code converts! AFL teams and the AFL are going after other sports top players but I believe they are underestimating what Sydney Swans Jarrad McVeigh says!
There is lots going on around the World with Intl Aussie Rules Footy growth. Here is a article featuring Canadian Mike Pyke of the Sydney Swans. Mike grew up playing Rugby Union in Canada. This quote in the article by Swans midfielder Jarrad McVeigh is very important and I often say something similar to Canadian players new to Aussie Rules Footy. "I think the hardest thing for [rugby league converts] will be to read the game of AFL. You can work on your skills as much as you like but if you don't know where to run, you won't get the ball. That's going to be the biggest hurdle for them." This is 100% true and although AFL teams and the AFL are going after other sports top players I think at times they are underestimating what Jarrad says. For the article on afl.com.au

Just after talking Aussie Rules Footy on 5AA today from Ottawa something bizarre/crazy/ridiculous happened as I was still talking with the host, Jeff Burzacott!

I'll have the audio shortly from 5AA as this was ridiculous what happened. I know I get a bit excitable on the radio but today I was told off by 2 security guards obviously with nothing to do for talking to loud on a public phone. I was in a area between 2 sets of doors that enter the mall so the only people that could hear me I believe were the people entering the mall. I basically laughed at these security guards "make out wanna be cops" as I couldn't believe it was happening and I continued talking with Jeff Burzacott. Well they did not like that. Jeff then asked me if I was about to get a tasered. Funny stuff. So now I get in trouble for talking to loud on the phone. What a joke. I can't wait to get this audio and add it to MYKwebTV. I believe it was unreal Live Sports radio.

Next week on 5AA I'll say what happened after I hung up with Jeff.

From Fri May 27. OAFL, my new team the Ottawa Swans will be going for their 1st win of the season against the High Park Demons in Toronto. Especially to Aussies come join me in helping the Swans!
Ooch, this is a bit before I had planned but I'll be playing "some" for the Ottawa Swans in the OAFL Ontario Aussie Rules Footy League at U of T in Scarborough on Saturday against the High Park Demons. I arrived in Ottawa and then trained on Thursday night pulling up OK today and being welcomed by the Swans incrediably seems I need to get the gear on tomorrow and try and help the 95% of Canadians on the team. I hope my forever 29 year young body holds up OK. Any Aussies out there come help the Swans in Ottawa. Seriously, call me 613 617 6655. AFL, The Roos 12-12 = 84 defeat the Crows 11-9 = 75 in Melbourne!
What were the Crows doing for 3 quarters? Resting like they have for most of this season it seems. The Crows had a 7 goal 4th quarter but it wasn't enough. Congrats to the Roos on the win. For the game report check out afl.com.au

The AFL has selected the World XVIII (Under 18s) squad to compete in the Under 16 championships against Australian states! Canada has 4 players selected!
This is great. The AFL are introducing the World XVIII (Under 18's) into the Division 2 NAB under 16 championships on an annual basis. This great concept provides young Aussie Rules Footballers in Canada the chance to represent this World Under 18 team. It will then also give them a good opportunity to make the Canadian Under 23 team and also the Northwind team which is the senior Canadian team. For more details check out afl canada

The Vancouver Cougars get off to a 3-0 start in the BC Footy, Canada competition!
This growing 4 team competition is well underway in the Vancouver and surrounding area. To help this competition grow and improve longtime Burnaby Eagle player, coach and former President Chris Freeman has moved to the North Delta Bayhawks as playing coach. Also joining Freemo is longtime Eagles great defender Peter Taylor. In other interesting news Canadian Northwind and 2008 AFL International Cup squad player Scott Fleming has moved from the North Delta Bayhawks to the West Coast Saints. Sun May 9. AFL, The Adelaide Crows finally have a win!
After a 0-6 start to the season the Crows finally had a win in Adelaide on Sunday against the Richmond Tigers but I bet most of the disappointing crowd of 31,196 crowd were not too happy as late as 3/4 time. The Crows were down at 1/2 time and only up by 5 points at 3/4 time against the winless Richmond Tigers but had a great final term. The final score, Crows 15-14 = 104 defeated the Tigers 7-12 = 54.

In early June 2010 I will be based in a different city from Calgary that has a Australian Rules Football team!
Where will that be? Well it could be anywhere in Canada, USA, Europe, Japan or maybe back at the Gawler South Lions.

The Adelaide Crows are now 0-4 after loosing to the Carlton Blues! I thought the earthquake in Adelaide late last week was God giving the Crows a good shake up!
The final score was the Blues 16-7 = 103 to Crows 6-19 = 55. Bad kicking is bad footy as they say. I thought the earthquake in Adelaide late last week was God giving the Crows a good shake up. Not so. Seems it scared the crap out of the forwards. The Crows face the Bulldogs this week, Ooch 0-5 would be disaster!

BL&GFA, the South Gawler Lions have a good 1st up win over the Nuriootpa Tigers!
After being down by 34 points at one stage the Lions 16-8 = 104 defeated the Tigers 12-9 = 81. The Lions won all 4 grades, a great effort.

From Sun April 11, 10 The Adelaide Crows are now 0-3 after loosing to the Melbourne Demons!
The final score, Demons 7-15 = 57 def Crows 5-11 = 41. I'm not surprised by this score after watching the Crows in Rd 2 and the game being played in Melbourne. Dessy O'Dwyer the former star Woodville Full back could be correct in suggsting to me last week that the Crows may have played above themselves in 2009 and with few injuries. I'm hoping for a quick turnaround.

The Adelaide Crows were soundly beaten by the Sydney Swans in AFL Rd 2, 18.10 = 118 to 11.9 = 75! 5AA radio!
It was great to be back at Football Park now called AAMI stadium for the AFL Adelaide Crows vs Sydney Swans Rd 2 game. Unforrtunately the Crows were soundly beaten by a better Swans team. With only 3 days notice it was great to be sent a Members pass to the game thanks to Patrick Keane the AFL Media Relations Manager. I talked extensively about this game on Thursday on 5AA radio with Jeff Burzacott.

The coaches, players, media and the kids all dressed in the 9 SANFL team jumpers then competed in a entertaining Tug of War contest. MYKwebTV from this morning coming next week to coincide with the 2010 SANFL Rd 1. This MYKwebTV show includes a 1 on 1 interview I did with Ron Fuller the new South Adelaide league coach, the former Woodville and Woodville West Torrens player and Woodville West Torrens coach. The South Gawler Lions are looking for amuch improved year in the BL&GFA in 2010, a great South Aussie country league!
With quite a few new players and many young players improving the South Gawler Lions are definitly keen for a much improved year in 2010. Some of the young players include Peter Errigo, Aaron Bain, Tom Hopgood, Peter Wharton, Matt De Meo and Ben Rolton. I was told these players have had excellent pre-seasons to date and that they and will get the opportunity to play in the A Grade trials and then push for A Grade selection in Round 1 of the 2010 season. I look forward to watching the Lions in their 1st two trial games starting on Mar 20 against United from the Adelaide Plains.

Hope becomes reality forInternational footy in 2009 by Brett Northey.
"We have regularly provided an annual summary of Australian football's international progress. Since beginning this website in 2004 we have had the good fortune to be able to report that each year has been an improvement on the last. Perhaps a day will come when this is no longer the case, and certainly throughout the 20th century the sport's expansion had its peaks and troughs, its false dawns...." For the article

I firmly believe every Aussie Rules Footy player/Sports person past or present should watch this Theo Fleury CBC TV show below! You will gain something or lots depending on your current life in watching this amazing Sports/life recovery story! Theo Fleury's book "Playing with Fire" is excellent reading! The best interview/story so far was on CBC's The Fifth Estate. Watch it now, link is below!

Theo Fleury was a great NHL Hockey player most of his career with the Calgary Flames. His new book is great reading. An amazing Life story. Him blowing close on the $40 million that he made playing hockey on booze, cocaine, strippers, gambling etc, he buying a gun and about to kill himself, he now admitting to being sexually abused many times by his agent as a teenager, he now being sober the past 4 years, now helping people and his comeback and now retirement in the NHL a few weeks ago. My friend Grant Painter from the Calgary Stampeders Tailgate Party was at his retirement party 2 weeks ago and in this TV show from Friday night on CBC's The Fifth Estate. This is the best interview/production I have seen from his media tour the past week. It's 45 minutes but excellent viewing. You will gain something or lots depending on your current life in watching this amazing sports/life recovery story.

BL&GFA Sth Australian South Gawler Lions Award winners! In The Lions Den from President Percey!
"The South Gawler Football and Netball Club Senior Trophy Night held last Saturday night was an excellent, well organized, fun event that was enjoyed by the large and happy crowd. Thanks very much to the Netball Club and in particular Nicole Vardy, Karyn Applekamp, Debbie Koch, Jess Collins and Sheryn Schwerdt for organizing the event.

The highlight of the Football Clubs evening was the award of life membership to long term servant of both South Gawler and Willaston in Bob Ahrens. Bob has been around since the 1950s and his award for service as a trainer and club man was warmly received. Similarly the award of the Nottle Trophy for ‘Club Person of the Year’ to Sandy Brennan was very popular and appropriate. The Max Heinrich ‘Senior Club Person of the Year’ for 2009 is man mountain Matt Lutze for his varied off field service – he is nearly as good off the ground as when starring on it. Tough Todd Whiley was a deserved winner of the Mahoney-Schwerdt Trophy for Most votes in the A grade Mail Medal which was presented by Eddie Schwerdt himself - fantastic. Clubman Shane O’Donoghue was the winner of the BLGFA Reserves Goalkicking award and the SGFC Les O’Reilly Club Leading Goal kicker of the Year which is a deserved reward for hard work and dedication.

Congratulations to Danny Lee who won the Life Members A grade Best and Fairest Trophy – a fantastic effort from a very good player. Runner up was Kris Vandaloo with the trophy donated by Denron Metals. Best Team Man donated by Sterling Homes was deservedly Matt Lutze whilst the Most Consistent player donated by the Willaston Hotel is club man Lee Makris. Lee also now has the trifecta having finished first, second and third in the A grade Best and Fairest over the years. Congratulations to another gutsy clubman who won the Coaches award donated by Jims Fencing. The talented Jackson Dare won the ‘Elders Real Estate’ Rookie of the Year’ – well done.

In the Reserves the Garry Hurst Best and Fairest Trophy was a tie won by emerging talent Jake Spicer and club man Adrian Brown – congratulation to both these popular players. The Runner up trophy donated by the Costa Family was won by talented Justin Waters . It was no surprise when the rugged Tim Clift won the Best Team Man award donated by the Dublin Hotel which was very appropriate. Backing up his Best and Fairest win was Jake Spicer who won the Most Consistent Trophy donated by Adams and Son Fabrications – a very good year. This years Coaches Award donated by Luke McCracken is a famous South name and smooth player in Nicholas O’Reilly. Congratulations to young Jack Callander who was a popular winner of the Most Consistent award donated by Gawler Structural Services. Well done to all the senior squad players, trophy winners and trophy donors.

Now is time to positively contribute, spread the load and make a difference to our club and our community. The Lions now have a solid foundation for sustained success but it won’t just happen by magic – continued, high quality and consistent hard work is required by the next generation of administrators, workers and volunteers. ‘Go the Lions’" Jim Callander,
President

The Central District Bulldogs defeated the Sturt Double Blues in the SANFL, South Australian National Football League Grand Final!
Last Sat night here in Calgary. I was at a great CFL Canadian Footy game here in Calgary in minus 5 degrees from 4pm till 8pm, then I watched NHL Hockey the Calgary Flames defeat the Edmonton Oilers until 11pm in a Sports bar, then home and I was listening to the SANFL GF on 5AA.com.au. Now that was a great sports day.

Central 6.3  9.8  12.12  13.14 (92)
Sturt     3.3  3.6    6.7      7.12 (54)

The Geelong Cats 12.8 = 80 defeated the St Kilda Saints 9.14 = 68 in a great 09 AFL Grand Final!
What a great game it was. I enjoyed watching the Grand Final at a packed Bottlescrews Bills pub in Downtown Calgary with some mates, the Calgary Kookaburra's Women's Aussie Rules team players and many other Aussies and Canadians. Talking with some of the Kooka's they are looking forward to the US Nationals in October where they will be aiming to defend their title as the best Women's team in North America.

From Tues Sept 22. It's the Geelong Cats vs the St Kilda Saints in the 09 AFL Grand Final next Sat, Fri night Nth American time!

I'm tipping the Cats. If you are reading this and in or near Calgary and want to watch the game live at about 10pm Fri night the guys team the Roos/Bears AFL party is at Dickens Pub while the women's team Kooka's Party is at Bottlescrew Bills. Both of these pubs are in downtown Calgary. Amazingly TSN th
e number 1 or 2 national sports cable TV company in Canada, they are promoting the game this week during sports shows as they will be showing the AFL Grand Final Live on their new TSN2 channel. Now thats cool, Aussie Rules being promoted by TSN all over Canada.

The South Gawler Lions 13.10 = 88 defeated the Gawler Central Tigers 10.15 = 75 to win the Senior Colts Premiership in the BL&GFA, a great South Australian country league! Other BL&GFA Grand Final results!
Wow! What a great surprise I had this Sunday morning as I see on Ben Rolton's Facebook page pictures of the Lions Senior Colts win over their equal number 1 rivals the Gawler Central Tigers.

In the A Grade Tanunda 13.12 = 90 defeted Angaston 10.8 = 68. In the B Grade Gawler Central 11.3 = 69 defeated Nuriootpa 8.10 = 58. In the Junior Colts Nuriootpa 7.9 = 51 defeated Barossa Districts 4.4 = 28.

A report from Lions Senior Colts Premiership player Ben Rolton!
"To Myk Aussie and mates. 4 goals was needed to get back infront for the lead, it seemed that a long final quarter was on the cards however the boys didnt allow the scoreboard to distract us from the game plan. 2 quick goals including a team lifter from Cameron Felstead had the boys within 11 points when the 3 quarter siren blew.Coach Steve "Chippa" Nicolai reved the boys up and he knew the ball out of the centre was where we could lift. As soon as the quarter began the opening clearence went to Central but they were unable to kick a major. Bad kicking was keeping us in the hunt.  Then south managed to break into the forward line and Parsons poped up. He kicked truly twice in quick succesion and suddenly we had the lead. Felstead and Clayton Cameron kept winning the ball and part time ruckman Tom Hopgood was on fire. The ball once again found Parsons and when he's hot, he's hot. He wasnt going to miss this chance either. We moved clear and another goal to the lions saw us up by 13.  Gawler Central playmaker Charlie Molyneux managed however to goal and the game was again in the ballance. The next 7 or 8 minutes was an absolute struggle and Central cut the margin to one straight with a behind. I over heard the gawler central runner say 90 seconds remaining and a quick kick forward was marked by Tom Hopgood who missed but added a crucial behind to put us 7 points up. The Central Fullback, Peter Bradke, who had been kicking bad all day (2 out on the fulls from behinds in the final quarter), what was Herrmy (Centrals Coach) thinking? managed to kick the ball once again to South's most dangerous players where Paul Marschall, who had kept the Lions in the game earlier on and lifted when the game was there to be won, took a superb mark and despite cries of "Hold it up" from fans and teammates alike, he played on and had a pot shot from 50 metres out.I'll never forget, I had a perfect view of the line of the ball and it had no hope in hell of missing. That bomb had opened the lungs of The fat lady and the siren sounded at the ball up. I didnt hear it personally, it was so loud, just saw the jublilation on teammates faces and just as satisfiying, the tears on the chokers faces! The presentation was great as always and the lap of honour was obviously taken by an exhausted but at the same time extatic South Gawler side. Once the boys had to enter the change rooms, the banging on the wall to let the Tiger lads know that they would never get their hands on the prize or have the braging rights after a season of arrogance meant nothing! The club song was soung loud and proud and then the cry of "Oh Centrals are bastards" matched the same intensity of the song sung just before.

South Gawler      3.2  5.7   8.7     13.10 (88)
Gawler Central    2.6  7.7   9.12   10.15 (75)
Best South: Paul Marschall the Dean Tobbitt Medalist, rest played well!
      Central: Who cares!
Goals South: Ash Parsons 6, Nathan Bartsch 3, Peter Wharton 1, Michael Gajewski 1, Cameron Felstead, Paul Marschall 1
Central: Not enough of them!" By Ben Rolton #5

Ben thanks for that excellent report that definitly made me laugh and be proud to be a ex Lion. Well done!

Part of In the Lions Den from President Percey!

Congratulations to the South Gawler Under 17s, proudly sponsored by Jason and Jess Blown of Professional Linemarking, who won the 2009 Premiership in fine style last Saturday at Freeling. It was a high standard game with no quarter given or expected that whilst tough, was played in good, fair spirit and to which the good umpiring contributed. The Lions had to come from behind to win the clubs first Under 17s Premiership in 21 years and the winning atmosphere could almost be tasted after the game. Well done to every player in the squad who all have contributed to the teams success this season – you are all valued. Congratulations to clubman Steve Nicolai who is a terrific young coach and his team John DeMeo and Paul Anderson. Thanks to the trainers also for their selfless work over the finals and throughout the year.

The Under 17s Premiership win was South Gawlers fourth junior Premiership in six years meaning the Lions have won a third of the Premierships available in Under 15s and Under 17s over that period. Add to this a couple more Grand Final appearances, the successful inclusion of the Under 9, 11 and 13 program plus the healthy squad numbers in all grades then it can be clearly seen South Gawlers junior program is thriving. This health doesn’t just happen by accident – it is the result of consistent and high quality work by many people now over many years. There are too many to mention but they can take much pleasure out of Saturdays result for their own satisfaction but more importantly for all the players and the South Gawler Football Club. A job well done.

The Lions now have a solid foundation of junior development with which to base sustainable senior success upon. It will great to watch the further development of all players in the senior grades. With continued careful management and hard work the Lions have the chance to re-emerge as a consistent senior contender to complement the already successful junior program. However it won’t just happen by magic and consistent work is still required!" Jim Callander

The West Coast Saints defeated the Burnaby Eagles to win the 09 NWPAFL Grand Final, Western Canada!

What a great summer weather drive it was for me from Calgary to Vancouver especially to watch the NWPAFL Grand Final. The North West Pacific AFL competition also known as BC Footy is now a 5 team and rapidly growing competition in British Columbia, Canada. The Grand Final was between the undefeated Burnaby Eagles coached by Matthew Bell and the West Coast Saints coached by Ward Frost. Neither of these sides had won a premiership. The UBC Fields were in great condition and I was gladly surprised at the excellent crowd in attendance eagerly waiting for the start of the Grand Final.

Both teams of approximately 25 players each lined up, Stuart Grills and Peter Campion the founders of BC Footy were the umpires and then the load speakers played both the Canadian and Australian National anthems. In my opinion the Canadian anthem kicking butt over the Aussie anthem in both lyrics and sound. The game was now ready to begin.
The Eagles started well and led at quarter time in a very intense opening quarter. The Saints fought back to lead at ½ time 3.3 = 21 to 2.6 = 18. The Eagles wasted several opportunities as can be seen in the score but also two mistakes giving the ball back to the Saints when they could have scored near the end of the 2nd quarter in the Eagles half forward area were very costly. The Saints dominated the 3rd quarter in what was still an amazingly intense game. Many Grand Finals start off intense and then seem to open up but the players on both teams attacked the ball and player at an incredible intensity, mostly in a fair manner. This played into the Saints favor as the Eagles who were a smaller team couldn’t get going their more open running style with apparently the best onballers in the league. With this intensity many kicks came out of packs and the Saints bigger players were in a position to take marks over the smaller Eagles. The Burnaby Eagles lacking in height missed bigman Brent Frewen the former SANFL Woodville West Torrens Eagle. The score at the ¾ quarter break was Saints 5.6 = 36 to Eagles 2.7 = 19. Wow the Saints were feeling they could upset the to date in 09 the undefeated Eagles.

The start of the 4th quarter saw the Eagles run the ball well. They fought back in what was still a very intense game to level the scores at 5.7 = 37 with approximately 8 minutes to go. In the dying minutes the Saints scored a goal and then a behind to win by 7 points in a very entertaining and a great standard game. For the Eagles Shane Burgman in the centre and Steve Harper in defence were outstanding all day while Rowan Tillie, Adam Cole, Cha Pritchard and Chris Freeman made up my best 6. With possibly the biggest junior competition outside of Australia, Aussies still traveling to Western Canada now on 2 year work visas and more and more Canadians finding out about our great game I believe the well organized BC Footy competition will continue to grow and improve at a amazing rate. Congratulations to the West Coast Saints on their 1st premiership and to all involved in making it a great Grand Final and a excellent BC Footy competition.

I talked extensively about the NWPAFL Grand Final today with Jeff Burzacott on 5AA South Australian radio. You can listen live each week 5.15am Thursday morning South Australian time which is 1.45pm Wednesday Mtn time in North America. Listen Live 5AA.com.au

The South Gawler Lions, South Australian football Under 17's are in the BL&GFA Grand Final!

Part of In the Lions Den from President Percey. "The South Gawler Under 17s, proudly sponsored by Professional Linemarking, had a convincing win over last years Premier in last weeks Preliminary Final at Kapunda. It’s a great effort and reward to make the Grand Final. Good Luck to the young Lions – do your best, have fun, work hard, enjoy the experience and represent yourselves and your club to the best of your ability. With a large squad there will inevitably be disappointments and it is the responsibility of the whole club and squad to ensure every Under 17 is included in the experience as all members have done their bit during the year.

The Sterling Homes Under 15s weren’t quite good enough to win last Saturday but can be proud of what they have achieved on Saturday and this season. They have maintained the high standards of the Lions junior program and with ten first year players in Saturdays team there is much promise for next season and beyond. Well done to all concerned.

Yet another era was concluded on Saturday with the completion of the Sterling Homes Under 15s season with coach Grant O’Reilly announcing his retirement. Grant, who is a true club man, has made a fine contribution to South Gawler and the community generally over the best part of ten years. He coached at Gawler East Primary School, was the Lions junior development officer for three years and of course under 15s coach for the past three years winning the Premiership in 2008. He has made innovative player development a priority and his rewards will continue in the years to come as the players he coached continue their careers with a solid foundation. Thanks Grant for your work, integrity and quiet but efficient contribution - a fine example of a junior coach." Jim Callander
