The Calgary Bears hammer the Calgary Kangaroos in Alberta Footy!
On a warm but windy day in Calgary the Bears were easy winner over the Roos. The Bears have now won the last 2 games in the 09 series.

BL&GFA in South Australia! The South Gawler Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Milligan as our Senior Coach and Kym Hillard as our Reserves Coach for the 2010 season, from President Percey.
"Andrew Milligan brings a wealth of experience to the Lions, having previously coached at Under 19 level in the SANFL for four years at both the West Adelaide Football Club (2003, 2004 & 2007) and the Norwood Football Club (2008), always competing in the finals and guiding the Bloods to a premiership in 2004. Andrew was the Senior Coach at the Kapunda Football Club in 2009 and is an AFL Level 3 accredited coach. Whilst taking a break from coaching in 2006 he filled the role of Recruiting Scout with the Brisbane Lions Football Club.

Andrew was also employed in a full-time capacity as the Football Development Manager at the West Adelaide Football Club for five years (May 2000 to April 2005), overseeing the clubs' emergence as a leader in the area of junior development after many years of mediocrity. Producing twenty-four state Under 16 representatives, seven AIS/AFL scholarship holders, nineteen state Under 18 representatives, five AFL Under 18 All Australian representatives, thirteen 'home grown' AFL draftees and winning four SANFL underage premierships were amongst the many notable achievements during his time at the club.

Football Director Matthew Trimboli said "our club has had a group of people working on our football structure in preparation for the 2010 season for some time now, with a focus on ensuring we appointed the best possible coaching panel to take us forward. We were overwhelmed by the large number of people that enquired about or applied for our senior coaching positions and this reinforces the fact that we are a strong club with a bright future.

We are very excited about having Andrew Milligan and Kym Hillard coaching at our club for the next couple of years. They both bring with them a level of expertise and professionalism that will see our club develop a successful game style across our senior and junior grades, assist the transition of many of our promising junior players into the senior ranks and this along with the recruitment of a small number of players will ultimately improve our performances at senior level."
Andrew Milligan said "the opportunity to coach the South Gawler Football Club over the next few years will be an exciting challenge. We already have the nucleus of a competitive team. By placing a greater emphasis on developing the many talented junior players at the club and selectively recruiting a small number of key players, I believe that we can build a successful 'A' Grade team.

South Gawler is a club with a long history of success. I don't shy away from the clubs' past achievements. I will be challenging our senior and junior players, coaches, administrators, volunteers and supporters to unite and create our own period of success. To be successful we need to be progressive in our thinking and embrace change so that we create an environment where our players across all grades enjoy playing the game, develop and represent the Lions with distinction. We also need to ensure we value the efforts of all the volunteers that fill the numerous roles within the club.
I have known the club captain Aaron Bayliss for many years and he is simply an outstanding person, the most honest player that I've had the privilege to coach and a genuine leader. I really look forward to working with Aaron and the clubs' other senior players to set the high standards that will be required at training and on match day to make us genuine premiership contenders."

Kym Hillard also brings a lot of experience to the club, having previously served as the Reserves Coach at the Lameroo Football Club (2003), Under 19 Assistant Coach at the Norwood Football Club (2008) and filled the dual positions of Under 17 Coach and Senior Assistant Coach at the Kapunda Football Club in 2009. Kym also has a PE teaching background, coaches the Elizabeth District SAPSASA representative team (since 2005) and is the SAPSASA Coordinator for the Elizabeth District.

Kym Hillard said "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the South Gawler Football Club. I look forward to developing a culture of success and enjoyment. I see my role as assisting the club to create a new chapter of success, to add to its already proud history."

The club has also appointed Gary Low (A Grade Assistant Coach) and John De Meo (B Grade Assistant Coach) as members of our coaching panel for 2010 and we will be appointing a Fitness & Rehabilitation Coordinator in the near future. From Sat Aug 8. The Calgary Bears 8-5 = 53 defeated the Calgary Kangaroo's 4-4 = 28!
On a magnificent summers day and on a great field the Calgary Bears defeated the Calgary Kangaroos for the 1st time this year in the Calgary based series. The Bears welcomed back Wade Arnold from a shoulder injury. Wade kicked 4 goals at full forward. Bears ruckman, the very promising Canadian Seyi Oyewumi suffered a ankle injury early in the game and unfortunately did not return. Well done to the Bears and to all that played today.

USA defeat Canadian in Mason Ohio! Many newcomers for Canada! MYKwebTV from USA vs CDN in 07 in Vancouver, Canada! 5AA radio on Wednesday!
The final score, the USA Revolution 12-11 = 83 to Canadian Northwind 5-3 = 33. There were many new players in the Canadian team including 5 from the BC Footy competition and 3 from the recently formerd Ottawa Swans in the Ontario league. The Calgary Kookaburra's Women's Aussie Rules Footy team!
Jake Anson the founder and coach of the 08 US Natl's Womens Champs the Calgary Kookaburra's asked me to take some drills at training last Thursday night here in Calgary. It was a lot of fun. There were many very keen ladies playing and keenly learning the greatest game in the World to play. For more on the Kooka's Click here

The Calgary Kangaroo's defeated the Calgary Bears to win the Biggest ever Stampede Cup! A AFL Legend was in attendance!
The Roo's defeated the Bears in the final to win the 09 Calgary Stampede Cup. It was great to see British Columbia for the 1st time ever field two sides in the Stampede Cup. It was also great to see a Edmonton team play for the 1st time ever. There was also a womens game in this biggest ever Stampede Cup. In attendance was one of the greatest ever AFL players, Robert Flower. I enjoyed a great chat with Robert talking about his time at the Melbourne Demons, the legendary South Australia vs Victoria state games in which he captained Victoria on several occasions.

From July 1. The Biggest ever Stampede Cup is Saturday July 4 in Calgary!
This year will see the Calgary Kangaroos, the Calgary Bears, the Burnaby Eagles, the Vancouver Cougars/Saints and a new Edmonton team with some help from the Calgary Chieftains Gaelic team compete for The Stampede Cup. The womens teams from Calgary and the Edmonton Emu's will also be playing games. This is the biggest Aussie Rules Footy tournament of the year in Calgary. The huge say of footy starts at 9.30am at the Saints Rugby Field in Calgary's NE. Directions: Go North on Deerfoot Trail then turn right at 32 Ave NE. Turn right again at 12 Street NE and follow it around until you see the Saint's field or the Polish community centre.

BL&GFA, South Gawler Lions defeat Freeling Redlegs! Part of In the Lions Den from President Percey!
"South Gawler Football Club traveled to Freeling last Saturday and returned with five good wins, a clean sweep. Freeling had a clean sweep on Friday night when the Under 9s and Under 11s played but the players always enjoy themselves and the coaches are very pleased with their attitude and development.

The Denron Metals A grade prevailed with the last kick of the day to win what was probably the battle for bottom position. Clubman Brenton Craigs kick was straight and true after the final siren to seal a very competitive and exciting game with many fine juniors playing for both teams. For South Gawler it was good to see Under 17 Tom Hopgood playing A grade and excellent that three 18 year olds in Shaun Lay, Jackson Dare and Sam Thomas made the A grade best players. Hopefully the juniors of both clubs will quickly develop and both clubs will play an even more exciting grand final in not too many years to come." Jim Callander       

Sad news as Ross Hogan a former Pt Adelaide Magpie, Sth Gawler Lion and Port Districts player crosses to the other side.
Known as Hoges, Ross came to Adelaide from Cummins and played very good football for the SANFL Port Adelaide Magpies Under 17's, Under 19's and Reserves. I had the pleasure of being great friends with Ross during this time as we did our apprenticeship together at GMH. I believe Ross could have quite easily had a very successful SANFL League career as a defender at any of the other 9 SANFL clubs in the 80's and early 90's. The Magpies were very strong club during Ross's time there. Ross then went and played great football for the South Gawler Lions and thus became great friends with many of my mates from this very successful club. Ross's A Grade footy career was unfortunately cut short after being beaten up in a Adelaide nightclub during his time at South Gawler.

I found out today that the Chapel was full and about 200 mates were standing outside listening on speakers. Three of his mates read out stories while many stories about him from all parts of his life were shared. A lot of Port Adelaide Magpies people were in attendance. RIP Hoges you Champ!

In a full 18 a side game the Calgary Kangaroos 7-10 = 52 defeated the Calgary Bears 6-9 = 45. It was a good surprise to see Brad Flower again playing for the Calgary Kangaroos, his 1st appearance in 09.

I'll be there watching on Saturday at the Saints' Rugby Club, 1500 30th Avenue N.E. a 2pm start. Playing across the 2 rugby fields thus a full size Aussie footy field is the best field that we have ever had in Calgary. This year the Bears will be coached by new in 09 David Rowe while the Kangaroos will be coached also by new in 09 Dane Rolfe.

BL&GFA Rd 6, the Lions to take on 120 year rivals the Donnybrooks! Past Players function! 08 Calgary StampedeMYKwebTV co-host Andrew McDonald will be making the trip from Perth! Part of In the Lions Den from President Percey!

"The week South Gawler play Willaston at the Den in a continuing tradition that now spans 120 years. Its always a big day and this Saturday will be no exception - especially for the Lions Denron Metals A-grade. The South Gawler Football Club A grade will put twenty one players on the ground who are expected to play the Donnybrooks with desperation, pride and teamwork in front of what is expected to be a bumper crowd. The players must give an extraordinary 110% effort for our club and leave nothing on the oval for their own and their club sakes. The supporters need to give 110% commitment for our team off the ground proudly, loudly and enthusiastically. This week could be start of many Grand Finals this season for the Lions and needs to treated as such by the whole club.

The big game will be played in front of many Past Players who are returning to the Den for the now traditional luncheon. They include members of 1959, 1969, 1979 and 1999 Premiership teams who will be looking forward to seeing the current crop of Lions carry on their proud tradition. The players include Noel Kellond and Tony Collins who are returning from the Northern Territory, Guy and Yves Sibenaler from Melbourne and Andrew McDonald from Perth. Lunch will start at noon and will cost $25. Thanks to the Willaston Hotel, The Exchange and The Kingsford Hotel for their sponsorship of what is always an excellent social event to which every one is invited.

Congratulations to clubman Tyson ‘Freddy’ Bowden who made his A grade debut last week – great to see. Last weeks Player Auction was very good with last years total being exceeded. Thanks to all concerned. This weeks “Kingsford Hotel’ Club Person of the Week is Paul Mann. Paul is probably not noticed by many but is a valued volunteer who forms an important part of the senior coaching panel. His dedication is such that he returns from interstate at his own expense so he can contribute and support in a quiet, intelligent and valued manner.
     
It should be a great day of country sport this Saturday at the Den and all Lions are strongly urged to make the effort to attend and support our club. Either way it will be season defining for the A grade who will need to treat it as such. They need to stand up, show passion, pride and desperation especially in front of the past players who will expect nothing less. Its time for the 2009 Lions to make their own history and up to all those off the ground to support them. The Calgary Kookaburras the 08 USA/Nth American Women's Champions started their 09 season on Saturday! The 'Downunder Travel' Alberta Footy Schools Program!
Wow! There are seriously lots of Kookaburra's in Calgary. I was very impressed at how happy and the great energy that the Kooka's had Saturday night at their Jersey Presentation night after they played Rd 1 of their 09 Aussie Rules Footy season on Saturday. The Kooka's that were started in 07 by Jake Anson have had amazing growth. This year the Edmonton Emu's have formed coached by Tristan Waldock making Alberta the definte leaders in Women's Aussie Footy in Canada and the USA.

They have also started a Junior program called the The 'Downunder Travel' Alberta Footy Schools Program where the Kooka's headed by Amanda O'Rea will be teaching Aussie Rules Footy to guys and girls in schools in Alberta in the upcoming weeks. From Fri May 8. The Calgary Kookaburras the 08 US/Nth American Women's Champions start their 09 season this Saturday!
I'm looking forward to watching the Kookaburras on Saturday play their 1st games of the 09 season. Jake Anson was saying this week that they had 40 women at training this week. Amazing growth. The games will be played this Saturday from 12 noon to 4.30pm at the Queen Elizabeth Elementary School located at 402 18th St NW in Calgary. I'll then be attending their jersey presentation function that night which I believe will be another well organized and enjoyable event.

Australian Rules Football makes news to approx 5 million sports listeners in the USA and CDN on The Jim Rome Show. Unfortunately it was the Torquay Tigers Victorian Aussie Footy team "All White Night KKK" disgrace!
This is I believe the 1st time that I have written anything negative in regards to Australian Rules Football in the past 8 years. I must report this though.

Very sad this. A image on the Torquay Tigers website made the talk Friday on The Jim Rome show that goes to approximately 5 million USA and CDN sports listeners. As soon as I heard Jim mention Australian Rules Football I was very excited but then to hear him talk about this for about 5 min's was shocking and I was really annoyed and upset.
 
I bet guys like Paul O'Keeffe that started US Footy and who has done many years of hard work growing the game in the USA would be very disappointed that Australian Rules Football made news to approx 5 million USA and CDN listeners in this disgraceful way. Along with guys like Mark Block, Stuart Grills, Chris Freeman and many more who have done massive amounts of work growing the game in Canada.

Jim Rome is the Biggest and in my opinion equal Best sports radio guy in the World. I've been lucky enough to get on his show including talking Aussie Rules Footy and NFL etc and have met him at a Super Bowl week in the media centre.

This great tournament that started about approximately 8 years ago features teams from Vancouver, Seattle and Calgary. I'm tipping the Burnaby Eagles to win this years BC Footy Cup.
