Commissioner Roger Goodell -- Super Bowl Press Conference Transcript
02/01/2008 NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL
Super Bowl XLII News Conference Phoenix, Arizona – February 1,
2008
Please give your reaction to the Buffalo Bills plans to stage
regular season games and preseason games in Toronto beginning in 2008 and also
what concerns the Canadian Football League (CFL) has about the NFL coming to
Canada?
“Well, you may know or may not know, earlier this week we
completed our process, our due diligence on the proposal for the Buffalo Bills
to play a limited number of games in Toronto over the next five years. It is a
preseason game every other year and a regular season game for each of the next
five years. I think it was done very thoughtfully and I think it was done to
help regionalize the team even broader than it is. As you know they have
regionalized throughout western New York and that has been helpful in making the
team more successful from a business standpoint and marketing themselves more
effectively. They have a tremendous amount of interest north and into Canada and
into the Toronto/Hamilton area and I think this will be great for all fans. It
will give the opportunity for people in Toronto to have a game in their market
and it will also give the Buffalo Bills fans a chance to still go to that game.
As far as the CFL, it is very important to us. We have always had a very strong
relationship with them. I believe very much that their success is important. I
have spoken to Mark Cohon, the CFL Commissioner, many times and I think he is
comfortable with the arrangements being made around these games to help the CFL.
We want to continue to have a broader relationship with the CFL which we will
work with them on.”
Then later on in the report
The decision by the Bills to play some games in Toronto really begs
the question of if it is a tentative step down a longer road. What circumstances
would have to exist and what conditions would have to be met for the NFL to
consider expanding or relocating an existing franchise into a Canadian market?
“We know there is tremendous fan interest in the NFL up in Canada.
We are very conscious, as I said, of our partners and friends in the CFL. It
serves to promote football in Canada and we want to continue to promote that. We
are not actively looking at expansion right now. It’s not on our front burner.
The Bills, as I’ve said, have a tremendous fan base that comes down from the
Toronto/Hamilton area and it’s logical as they continue to regionalize and
broaden their support, that this would benefit the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. So,
we think that this is an intelligent move.”
Does that mean that expansion is off the table?
“Expansion is off the table for right now. It’s really not a
focus for us, so it’s not about Canada or Mexico or even U.S. cities.”
Is the Canadian market off the table?
“Expansion is off the table. We are not looking to expand as a
league. If we do look to expand, certainly markets in Canada would be something
we look at.”
“Expansion never was the real threat to
Toronto. It always was franchise movement. In that regard, the door has been
wedged open. Toronto right now is an NFL city. “Argonut
“This makes no sense to me, the NFL leaves a
major TV market in Los Angeles vacant for years, and then decides to invade
Toronto for a yearly game and some pre-season games. If the yearly game brings
in a good team, then perhaps it may do well. However, are the fans in Toronto
going to pay $80 a ticket to see the 49ers? Also pre-season games feature
players who could not crack a NFL Europe roster, but yet the tickets cost the
same as a regular season game.” CFL
Fan from California
“The NFL would be back in LA in a heartbeat. But so far it doesn't
seem like LA is too interested in having the NFL. Nobody has stepped up to form
an ownership group and there is no suitable stadium in LA. The latter may be a
factor in the former. If there was a suitable stadium perhaps an ownership group
would materialize. Anaheim Stadium, home of the Angels and former home of the
Rams, has been refurbished into a baseball facility. Memorial Coliseum and the
Rose Bowl are ancient and woefully inadequate for today's NFL. Indeed the NFL
faces the same challenges in getting a team in LA as the CFL faces in getting a
team in Quebec or the Maritimes. No stadium + no owner = no team.“ Hambone
“I don't like it, but I do think it makes
sense from the perspective of the Bills franchise and the NFL.
Toronto and the Southern Ontario market represents a population
greater than many successful NFL markets and is the commercial centre of Canada.
There's been much CFL talk that a league without Toronto would see the
sponsorship dollars dry up... the NFL and the Bills would love to tap into those
dollars to a much greater degree, as well as the fans in the region that will
buy merchandise and elevate the brand.
I have to believe that there's a certain degree of risk in
alienating their own fans in Buffalo, as there's been talk of Argos and Ticats
season ticket holders having first crack at the seats, not the Bills season
ticket holders. The risk is apparently outweighed by the short-term gains
and the longer-term testing of the market to see if a move is viable.
I agree that it's weird that the league has not made more efforts to
return to LA and to attract an owner that would pave the way for that. I
have to think a market like Mexico City also holds a lot of appeal for it's
population and it's climate being more fitting for the NFL schedule. “
GreatWhiteNorth
“That old Canadian colonial inferiority
complex has some members of the press saying that the Bills' arrival in Toronto
could mean the end of the Argos and even the CFL. B.S. for the former and even
more B.S. for the latter.
Toronto is an NFL town but that's not a huge deal. CFL fans are
rabidly supportive here. We are a solid niche market that always comes
through.
Let the Bills move here permanently. The teams can co-exist.
At the Rogers Centre NFL tickets would have to be big dollars and, yes,
they'd sell out every game for a few years. Once we Torontonians get used to our
new toy, all except for the biggest fans will become bored and go back to just
supporting the Leafs en masse.
One Bills/Argos fan I know says he's not going to the Bills games at Rogers
because it isn't the NFL. No tailgating. Another issue. No tailgating means no
real NFL experience.” Argopunk
“No offence, but I tend to put a little more credence in the
opinion of a guy like Bobby Ackles, who's seen both leagues up close and from
the inside. If he says that there's reason to fear on the business side of
things, then I'm not about to dismiss it.
The attendance and fan support issue is certainly part of the equation. The
Argos have done a good job of building this since the stabilization in their
ownership and have really put themselves back on the map to a degree. While
I do believe that they'd maintain a solid core of fan support, and retracement
from the previous levels will cause the casual fans (and any crowd of 30,000
contains a lot of casual fans) to re-think whether it's the place to be. I
look at the support for the Marlies (averaging around 4500-5000 fans) as a
potential barometer of what a perceived 2nd tier game is going to generate in
terms of support. It's pro hockey, but it's not the Leafs... and in this
example, we're talking about Leafs tickets being nearly impossible to come by.
The other side of the equation is the corporate support. While
I would like to think that there are a number of companies that will seek to
maintain their Canadian identity (Purolator, Tim Hortons, Scotiabank, etc) and
continue to support the CFL, one also has to believe that there'd be some
attrition as another big competitor joins the fray in competing for a somewhat
finite pool of money. One needs to look no further than the NHL where RBC
and TD are working to expand their US visibility by going after naming rights on
buildings south of the border rather than bidding on Canadian ones. Some
businesses will separate out any patriotic feelings and get down to what they
feels offers them the best exposure... and some of those will see that vehicle
being the NFL.
I do think that there's a little too much of the "sky is
falling" mentality, but as Ackles has said, (paraphrasing) by the time we
realize it really is, it will be too late. I'd rather see the CFL passions
ignited and acted upon in shows of support for the teams and the corporate
sponsors than to see an attitude that everything will be alright and we can sit
back and relax, safe in the knowledge that the CFL will live forever. Let's
not take what we have for granted. “ GreatWhiteNorth
“All your points are well taken.
At the end of the day, the fans will decide. And I think there
would be the 'buy Canadian' factor also. Besides patriotism Canadian football is
a better game, in my opinion. Maybe we don't have the best athletes for American
football but we have the best for Canadian football. I believe competition is a
good thing and to one of your points, if the NFL comes to town, the CFL/Argos
will have to get creative and continue the good work they've been doing over the
past few years.
At the end of the day, I think the Bills are a long way from leaving Orchard
Park.” Argopunk
“I think that you're right on three points. I agree that the CFL is the better
game, but I think most would concur that the NFL is the better 'product'. The
packaging, marketing, and culture around the game dwarfs that of the CFL. I
agree that competition is good, particularly for the customer, but there are
many good companies that get bought out or go under due to having to compete
with much larger competitors... think mom and pop vs Walmart.
I agree that the Bills are unlikely to leave Buffalo anytime soon,
and I'd wish Ralph Wilson another 50 years if I had it within my power. There
are likely to be some some "Save our Bills" campaigns, and I would
have to think that there'd be some local money in Buffalo that would be able to
capitalize on the goodwill of stepping up and buying the team to keep it
there... but is there enough goodwill from that to justify being the highest
bidder when you look at the ambitions of the Rogers group.
What gives me a little faith is the actions of the NFL in currently
working around the CFL schedule and what they're saying in terms of the CFL's
importance to the health of football in Canada. I know that there's no
value in looking back and stating, "but you said..." if they choose to
not abide by this spirit down the road, but realistically, what are we going to
do to stop them?“ GreatWhiteNorth
“WHOA...........
Personally I really feel it will KILL the CFL as we know it!! (Being from
the TO area) I'm not saying it will destroy the CFL altogether, but it
will kill the east. Since being in Calgary, you fans in the west ROCK!! (Even if
you Calgary fans are down right rude to a true blue fan at the games :P ) I
don’t think any kinda NFL should be played in Canada, but who am I to
say...... remember the first year American teams played in the CFL ..... The
State side Colts Won the Grey Cup!!
My gut reaction really says its not a good thing for the CFL.
Thanks people for wonderful, knowledgeable posting last season. I
look forward to jumpin in and learning and yapping with you in 2008!” Cwoc
Argonut........AKA Fallsunrise
Also from Total-CFL.com Discussion. “I gotta
give Michael Landsberg credit!” GreatWhiteNorth
“I'm not normally a big fan, but he did an
episode of Off the Record yesterday that featured David Cynammon, Thurmon
Thomas, a CBC journalist and a Buffalo-based reporter. Nearly the entire
show was devoted to NFL-CFL discussion, including whether there should be
concerns about this deal, and which is the better game.
One point raised by Cynammon, who seemed somewhere between positive
and resigned to the deal happening and making the best of it, was that this kind
of a deal pretty much establishes Toronto as part of Buffalo's market for NFL
purposes and would likely lessen the chances of expansion or another franchise
moving there. He stated that it didn't have impact whatsoever on the Bills
long-term possibilities of moving to Toronto, and while he admitted that this
could be distressing for Buffalo residents, if the wider marketplace proved to
make the franchise more viable in it's current home, then it would be a win-win.
I agree with both points.
When Landsberg was asked at the end of the show whether his first
choice would be to attend an Argos game or a Bills game, he quickly responded
that the Argos would be both his first and second choice.
Right answer Mikey!
There was discussion on the show showing a clip from Rogers,
Godfrey, etc and stating that there would be some tickets for sale for the Bills
game under $100... but they seemed to be laughing that it wouldn't be many.
Cynammon also went on the record that there wouldn't be a 5 year commitment,
which is counter to previous reports. “GreatWhiteNorth
“I guess Landsberg isn't a
Rogers loyalist. Nice sentiment from the man.”
Eskinator
“Good for Landsberg. Thanks for the info.“ Argopunk
“He did it again last night when Pinball was
shilling Bills tickets as a package with Argo tickets.” Argonut
“Maybe the love for the Argos comes out when
their future looks threatened.”
Argopunk
“Bob McCown was saying today, and Dave Perkins
reported something similar in the Star, that there are some rumblings of
discontent out there about the Bills moving into Toronto and that we may see
increased support for the Argos and CFL as a result. Ted Rogers making a
complete moron of himself and insulting the taxpayers of Ontario at that press
conference the other day probably didn't help the pro-NFLers' cause.” Ravi

Matt at the book signing with True-42.
"Matt
Dunigan's new book, "Goin' Deep"." Eskinator
I guess the
Winnipeg media is more on the ball than the Edmonton media. While the story has
hit the 'net about the Dunigan book and how Matt was returning to Winnipeg to
promote the book Edmonton media must have been napping. And correct me if I'm
wrong, but didn't Matt play longer here than all the other teams? True-42 and I
went to Audrey's books here in Edmonton to see Matt and Jim Taylor (who
co-authored the book). We got there early so had a bit more time with Matt. I
took the pictures I shot of him at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony for him
to see. I have many of his family from that session. He's interested in getting
them from me so I hope he reaches me about them. He signed every photo I put in
front of him. I also had a good shot of Linda and him from a tailgate in BC
(when they filmed the Friday Night Football promo, in what, 2005?) which he
signed.
Matt was his excellent, polished self. We really enjoyed the visit. Don't know
if folks know this, but the book has 4 possible front cover options with a photo
of Matt in 4 jerseys, in action. So you can pick an Eskimo, Lion, Bomber or Argo
cover. This didn't stop one gal, who came in to get a copy for her dad to ask
for the cover of Matt in the Riders jersey. Jim Taylor had to explain to her
that Matt never played for the Riders. Funny stuff.

July 18, 07 "CFL Video review was a great topic of Discussion over the past
week! Discussed by GreatWhiteNorth and Hambone! This is from the Total-CFL.com
Discussion!" Myk Aussie
From GreatWhiteNorth “Video Review!
There's been enough time to, at least, preliminarily evaluate whether video
review is working in the CFL. The biggest fear coming in was that the CFL would
not have enough camera angles to really make a big difference by being in the
right place to provide conclusive proof. While I do believe that it's better to
have it, as I have no problems with the delays and it has resulted in a number
of calls being corrected over it's short lifetime, I do believe that the fear
has been realized.
Last night's McClendon fumble is a case in point. The officials took upwards of
a full minute to initially rule on the play, so obviously that brings into
question the certainty of their decision. Then the official had only three
replays to look at, with the one that would seemingly provide the conclusive
footage turning out to be blocked out by sideline onlookers.
I'm not saying that they got the call right and I'm not saying that they got the
call wrong, but in cases where there would be some degree of uncertainty on the
initial call, as would seem to be the case last night, I'd like to see the
officials being offered the chance of calling their own video review and making
their initial call after having had the benefit of the replay. This would
perhaps be reserved to items surrounding possession changes, scoring plays or
plays in the last 3 minutes of a half. This would allow them to weigh the
balance of evidence from the replay, instead of having to make a decision based
upon a split-second glimpse where they may not have been in perfect position to
see the occurrence.
Reply from Hambone “My fear from Day 1 was lack of angles. NFL officials
are supported by the fact they probably have 3 times as many cameras covering a
field 2/3 of the size. I don't like the idea of officials calling their own
reviews in examples as you suggested. The whole review process can cause
officials to subconsciously start doubting their own abilities to make quick,
accurate spontaneous decisions. I like that they can gather together to
collaborate on a call. I think in such cases they have to continue to do so and
let the respective coaches determine if they need to challenge the result. I
fear if they start falling back to video review before making a call it will
only serve to further erode their confidence to make a decision on the field and
they will start relying on video.” Hambone
Reply from GreatWhiteNorth “I'm talking about situations where they
weren't in position to see the occurrence in a play... not out of position per
se, but sometimes the ball carrier goes down facing away from them or the ball
gets punched out in the opposite direction. If the aim of video review is to get
the call right, and the officials didn't have adequate sightlines to make a
definitive call based on seeing the action, why not turn to the tool? 쟕he
alternative is to make their best guess and then to take a look, but the video
can't overturn it based on the balance of evidence, but rather only on
conclusive evidence. I couldn't see this being used that often, but the
equipment is there already, so it makes sense to me to equip the refs with the
ability to use it if they choose to.“ GreatWhiteNorth
Reply from Hambone “Again I think they need to make their best judgment
call in such cases and leave the coaches to appeal that call via challenge if
they feel it necessary. That's the purpose of video replay and the challenge
system. For my money video replay has become a necessary evil in a way. True it
helps get things right when the angles are available. The downside is every time
one happens it causes a delay in the game which in turn saps energy and flow
from the game, the players and the crowd.
It's one thing to use the review to judge a call that has been made and
subsequently challenged. It's quite another to use a review to make the initial
call. I remain dead set against the latter. Introducing that only serves to
undermine the integrity of the officials and their own confidence in making
calls. With seven of them on the field should they start reviewing plays before
making a judgment the message they send to the teams and crowd is "we're not
sure what happened, we better go check the TV". They'll turn into a bunch of
Bryan Halls. "What happened there Farley?". Every time they used a review like
that players, coaches and fans will start wondering what exactly are they paying
attention to and what else have they really missed earlier in the game? Good
officiating comes from making good, spontaneous and instant judgments. Having
the review tucked in their back pocket to bail them out I fear will slowly lead
them to relying on it to the point where they start questioning themselves on
more and more plays and want to double-check on the review first.” Hambone
Reply from GreatWhiteNorth "Good officiating comes from making good,
spontaneous and instant judgments." Agreed. For the most part, I think the
officials do this. The key though is "good" judgments, and they're not always in
a position to do that.
잹y
equipping them to say, "I didn't get a good enough look at whether his leg
touched the ball on the way out of bounds." they'll be allowed to use good
judgment as to when to go to the video to make the initial call.
There are often situations that occur where the ref is positioned right where
he's trained to be and his eyes are focused right where they should be... but
the play takes the action in an unexpected direction and a ruling is needed
where there are no eyes. If the camera happens to catch what the eyes were
unable to, then it would be a beneficial tool to have at the ref's disposal.
One of the key elements in this, I submit, is whether one sees the delays in the
game as more of of a detriment than is offset by having a better chance that the
right calls are being made. I don't mind the delays in that context, and would
be happy to sit through a few more in the game if it meant that the refs were
able to get one or two more calls right in crucial situations every week. I
don't buy that it would affect their confidence. having the ability for other
people to challenge their calls with the chance of overturning them would have
much more of an effect that way than being able to admit they didn't see a play
well enough and want to get a second look at it. There's a big difference
between trying to overrule a call and making a fresh one based on the evidence
provided, and I think the latter results in more correct calls than the former.”
