Fri,
June 29, 07 "My thoughts on the 07 CFL season as requested by a Montreal based
businessman in the media!" Myk Aussie
CFLers the BC Lions could very well repeat and win the Grey Cup in 07! I'm
thinking it will be the Lions and the Stamps in the Western Final with the
Riders also a chance. I'm a bit worried about the Eskimos this year but if Champ
Ricky Ray stays healthy they may even get a crossover birth to the East. I
predict the Stamps to start the year well but "again" get bigheaded/over
confident and this could again be their downfall. I had to call and rip into Nik
Lewis last night on Calgary radio QR77 Sports Talk with Mark Stephen after he
said he had no regrets for bagging Lions Champ Geroy Simon last year. I wish
more people would admit it when they make mistakes. Nik can play though. His
mate and Al's former star Copeland looks like he may have a big year after a
average year here last year. Burris, Hmmm I'm not real keen on him. He's a bit
too inconsistent.
The boss at Riders, Eric Tillman is a good man. He'll sort those guys out and
hopefully have them focused on footy all week and less on the Cwoc
Babes/groupies at Earls in Regina during the week.
East! I'm going start with the Argos as favorites mainly because the Grey Cup is
in "Smelly Toronto" and the salary cap I'm sure has some loop holes and the
owners have $$$$. Damon Allen is awesome still. Why do I say Smelly Toronto".
I'm sure the rubbish has been picked up by now after the garbo guys strike
awhile back but TO also smells as not enough people follow the CFL. Too many
people there Rip into/Bag the CFL and also think they are going to get a NFL
team. Why do many TO people seriously think/believe that they are the centre of
the Universe. That still mystifies me. The Cwoc's there were very friendly to me
on my trips to TO though.
Al's again should be very good in the East and probably will again be in Eastern
Final with Argo's. Anwar Stewart is awesome on defence. Tiger-Cats, Hmmm don't
think so but they should be better than last year, now that won't be very hard
to do. Bombers could be good. Kevin Glenn I think is underrated and Milt is
still a champ.
Lions or Stamps vs Argo's or Als I'm thinking!
Go Lions! Go Al's! OK all teams I sort of root for as I simply love the CFL.
Seriously the CFL and Aussie Rules Footy in Canada keeps me here!

The Stampeders as many of you know
have a great tailgate party, the Biggest in Canada. The guy that started it all
is Grant Painter. In the 80’s when the Stampeders were in some financial trouble
Grant camped outside Ranchman’s on McLeod trail for many days in very cold
weather on the top of a 10+ metre scaffold set up. This gained a lot of media
attention from Canada. Many Stampeder season tickets were sold as a result. On
Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending Grant’s 50th birthday
party.
It was great last night to watch the DVD of all the funny crazy things Grant has
done over the years many of these involving the CFL. The party was held at the
new Rush Hour Sports Bar and Restaurant in downtown Calgary and it was hosted by
Red Dawg from CJ 92. You can see Grant entertaining the Stamps tailgate crowd in

I again had a great time at the 1st CFL preseason game of the season. It was
great to again meet up with many great CFL fans including some legend Total-CFLers.
The Stampeders looked impressive against the Eskimos and I believe they will
start the year strong.
I
believe the Stampeders will start the year strong. Will they again in 07 get
over confident as the season approaches the play offs and then loose in the
playoffs. I look forward to watching throughout the season how the new "1 Team"
campaign goes for them. After some very over the top end zone celebrations last
year and then Stamps receivers Jermaine Copeland and Nik Lewis's crazy sledge of
Lions Champ Geroy Simons on TSN Off The Record, it appears this year coach Tom
Higgins is being tougher on his players. They are promoting hard the "1 Team"
message. Being individuals seeking the Terrell Owens type attention that some of
them were in 06 it appears will not be tolerated. I’m not sure why coach Higgins
didn’t come down harder on the player in concern in 06 as he said on radio he
didn’t like the over the top end zone celebrations. I believe the Stampeders or
the Lions will get to this years Grey Cup from the stronger CFL West.
From Total-CFL.com Discussion. Sunday June 10 07. A detailed Eskimos training
camp from Great White North!
Perhaps the most popular person at camp this year is the one
handing out the roster sheets. While there's always a number of new faces and
names to learn, it goes a little further with this years version of the Esks.
There is a real emphasis on speed that has been talked about with the coaching
staff, and it's quite apparent in what has been on display in camp so far
through the first week.
Today's fan day saw a scrimmage with refs in front of a crowd
I'd estimate to be around 2500-3000. While there was no real tackling (just
wrap him up and get the whistle), it was a little more realistic read on some of
the things that are tough to measure in drills.
Coaches - The first thing that's quite noticable is that
Maciocia is taking much more of a back-seat role... as he's been quoted, he's
coaching the coaches. As such, it's been Chapdelaine that's been most visible
in camp, and I like the demeanor he's brought to the staff. Rick Worman is an
addition as QBs coach, and having worked previously with Ricky Ray in AFL2, it's
expected that he'll have an impact. Carl Brennan takes over the duties with the
O-line, while longtime asst coach, Bill MacDermott becomes an advance scout and
works particularly with the short-yardage offence situations. Coaching should
be improved this year over last as lessons were learned and some experienced
voices brought in, and in managing some of the roster turnover and loss of
leadership, that will be a crucial lynchpin. I expect a little more variety in
our offence, but as Maciocia points out... that offensive scheme that gets
picked on took the team to 3 of the past 5 Grey Cups and won 2 of them.
QBs - With Jason Johnson's retirement on the eve of training
camp, rumours were running rampant that he'd have been hard pressed to make the
squad anyways, with the Esks having two young guns in development behind Ray.
That may well have been true, but from what I've seen to date, development is
the key word. As long as Ray stays healthy, which historically he's done a
remarkable job of, the Esks will have plenty of time to groom Jyles, who has a
cannon and good athletic ability, and LeFors, whom signed a 4-year deal with the
Esks only to have the Oakland Raiders reportedly approach the club and attempt
to buy him out of that contract as they wanted to audition him in their system.
If Ray should go down though, and keeping in mind it's still relatively early
in the process of learning a new system, I'd expect the Esks phones to be
working overtime trying to find an experienced replacement, as neither looks to
be ready to step in at this stage. The fact that Johnson filed retirement
papers before the season makes him eligible to return this year and he does have
a VP-Marketing position with Edmonton-based Booster Juice as well as his TSN
production contract so he'll be sticking around town.
O-line - This is an area that looks substantially better than
one year ago. The return of Kevin Lefsrud gives us ratio flexibility as well as
depth, and having Patrick Kabongo dropping about 40 pounds from his 6'6" frame
will likely see even better quickness and stamina for the up-and-comer.
McGrath, Comiskey and Bakker are all veterans capable of starting for most
Offensive lines around the league, and import Raleigh Roundtree was a real
stabilizing factor with his ferocious run-blocking when inserted in the lineup
last year around mid-season. Paliwoda, a graduate of the Edmonton Wildcats
junior organization has had a good camp and rumours are that he may be kept
around as a developmental project rather than sending him off to the university
ranks. My read is that any of the import challengers they've brought in will
have little shot to crack this roster breaking camp.
RB - Ron McClendon was pencilled in at number one entering
camp, and there were a few of us that thought perhaps it was as a courtesy due
to having bided his time with the team for a few years. Whatever the reason,
he's certainly proved through week one that it should be his job to lose at this
point. Ranek has looked find, and exhibition game play may well tell the story,
while Tyler Ebell may be a guy that competes with him for the roster spot. Ebell
has looked great as a receiver out of the backfield and seems to have some
upside that the team might want to develop. 5 times in high-school this guy had
6 TDs in a game, and he ran for 994 yards in his freshman season at UCLA, so at
24 years old, there's a case to be made in investing in him. The Esks look
solid at FB with incumbents Bertrand and Maurer.
Receiver - At the start of camp, only Jason Tucker was
written in ink on the depth chart. I'm pretty comfortable in saying that you
can also put Trevor Gaylor's name in sharpie now too, as he's come in with a new
commitment and dedication it seems. His routes are sharper and he's doing a lot
to unwind any reputation he had for dropping some of the easy catches. His
speed and ability to make circus catches have never been in question, but he's
setting up for what could be a real breakout season after struggling as a
sophomore last year. The big surprise of camp for me has been Vince Strang a
receiver who would be generously described as smallish, but has made an
impression on a lot of onlookers this week. He may well unseat Tony Tomkins as
the primary returner for the club because of his ability to come in as a fifth
or sixth receiver showing great wheels and good hands. Kamau Peterson has
improved with every day of camp and may well displace Pat Woodcock who
reportedly re-worked his contract (ie. took a pay cut) this past week. JF Romeo
has also looked good on the NI side of things, while I've been impressed at
times by I Patrick Johnson and I Taco Wallace. There's a lot left to sort out
in these races still, including whether Mookie Mitchell will be able to lock up
one of the remaining spots. My bet is that he's kept around (reportedly also
'reworked' his deal) as somewhat of a mentor to the younger guys and he may be
moved on and off the active roster.
Over to the defence, the secondary is going to be the area
that benefits from the biggest influx of veteran talent. Omar Morgan hasn't
shown a ton in camp, but his credentials would suggest that he'll be there when
they cross the line to play the games. Stanford Samuels has been the biggest
standout in my mind, while safety JR Larose is looking that much more confident
this year too. Shannon Garrett is making the adjustment to corner quite well,
and also brings the flexibility to back-up at strong-side LB, so the veteran
looks to be well-positioned. Jason Goss has been dinged a little in camp, but
has looked reasonably solid for the most part. Of the rookies, only Brandon
Bruner has struck me as stepping up well enough to compete to displace sophomore
Jonte Buhl from backing up the others.
DL - Braidwood and Brown are likely to be given two of the
starting spots, but there's a real battle to stick for many others. Brandon
Guillory made a splash late last season, while Jabari Issa and cousins, Charles
Alston and Ron Warner are battling for one or two jobs. Issa and Alston are
each going into their third year with the Esks, and though Edmonton gave up
former first-rounder Jason Nugent for Warner, he's in tough to earn a job. Mike
Murphy has also shown well and may well be in the mix too, and the team is
toying with Kenny Hollis at DE after him starting camp competing at MLB. The
Esks should be solid but not league-leading in this area as I'm not sure that
there's anyone of superstar calibre at this point, though Braidwood has that
potential.
LB - This was the scary area for me. With Marsh and Mobley
hanging them up and the Esks never really being totally well off there last
year, they needed some people to step up and flank AJ Gass. So far, Ray
Perryman seems do have done just that, though he banged up his shoulder a few
days ago, as has Antico Dalton (converted DE and special teams demon). Siddeeq
Shabazz is still in the mix and Kenny Onatolu is another guy that's turned my
head a few times, but I haven't seen enough of him to make up my mind. I don't
think the Esks are going to be all-world right away with their linebacking crew,
but I do think they're better off than they finished last season.
P/K - I'm guessing at this point, that Strang might bump
Tomkins out of a job as the primary returner. Only a short year ago, Tony was
coming off a 5 or 6 TD year and looking for an out in his contract to test the
NFL. What a difference some special teams blocking rule interpretations make on
a guy's career. He may well win the job, but sentiment seems to be with Strang
right now. Fleming isn't really being pushed on either the punting or the
place-kicking right now with Kean pulling up lame before camp, and import Cody
Bliss likely more of a camp body, although a young one with impressive leg
strength. Bliss came in with a punting average of 46 yards or so last year, and
that's with hang-time being king. In the CFL, it seems hang-time isn't nearly
the measure that it is down there, and it appears that Bliss is tinkering with
his style to try and convert height into distance and he hasn't yet come out the
other end on that. He looks like he could kick in this league, but so far,
hasn't appeared as a guy that would push aside a veteran Canadian incumbent.
Overall, the Esks are going to be challenged in the box, with
the front seven being relatively young and inexperienced. Aside from Gass,
Warner is the only player that would really be characterized as experienced in
the competitors up front. The secondary will likely take a little time to gel,
but should be able to buy the front seven a lot of time to put on some pressure
when they get going. The offence promises to be a little more balanced with the
O-line better positioned to assert itself and with a combination of deep
threats, a running game, and a QB with good accuracy, I expect that it will be
the offence that carries the team out of the gate." Great White North, Total-CFL.com

From Total-CFL.com Discussion "The
Calgary Stampeders were on the practice field today and Quarterback Akili Smith
worked out with them. He was a Cincinnati Bengal 1st round pick in 1999 and
played for several NFL teams." Jerry Nuffy
"This will be an interesting one to watch. Smith is 31 years old, so no spring
chicken for a guy just learning the Canadian game, and he didn't have a
tremendous amount of success at the NFL level. At the same time, the CFL might
just be the fit for his skill set and he certainly has demonstrated in the past
that he's got skills, as evidenced by his high NFL draft status (3rd overall in
1999 I believe I read).
The other thing working in the Stamps
favor is that he's not likely to get a whole lot of attention in terms of going
back down south if he does succeed up here. At his age, he's got a chance for a
5-6 year career up here still, but not likely much of a chance of rejuvenating
viable interest in the NFL. I'll be listening for updates as to how he does in
camp, but until I hear otherwise. I don't believe that Burris should be losing
much sleep over this signing." GreatWhiteNorth

BC Lions are coming to
Calgary this Sunday!
Seeing that my favorite CFL team the BC Lions is going to be in
Calgary this Sunday I'm going to be filming at the tailgate party for
TotalCFLwebTV, interview a few of the great CFL fans including some Total-CFLers.
I'll definitely be asking the longtime Stampeder fans what they think of their
two Big Mouth Wide Receivers, Jermaine Copeland and Nik Lewis. These two guys
made a lot of noise last week on CDN National TV, refer below and then did not
back it up at all as the Stamps were hammered by the Lions 39 to 13. This along
with their many "over the top" Touch Down celebrations this year has some/many
Stampeder fans annoyed. Lions Wide Receiver Geroy Simon was "again" a star.
Some
important Stats from last Friday nights game were;
Stamps "Mouth of mighties" Jermaine Copeland had 1 catch for 35 yards while Nik
Lewis had 2 catches for 9 yards.
Hmm lets see what Lions Champ Geroy Simon had? Oh he had 8 catches for 120 yards
and a TD. Say no no! I would bet he has a great game again on Sunday. Geroy is
now odds on favorite to win the CFL MVP Award.
QR77 Coping with Nik show tonight
should be "extra" interesting!
I'll be definitely listening tonight to Mark Stephen and Jock Wilson the hosts
of QR77's SportsTalk as it's the "Coping with Nik show" where Copeland and Lewis
are in the Calgary QR77 studio from 9-10pm.
I hope Mark Stephen's is in a way the the voice tonight of many Stamps fans and
rips into them for being way to over the top of late as they embarrassed
themselves Huge this time. I think they both want as much attention as FLFP
Terrell Owens. I just wish they both would shut up, play good footy and do no TD
celebrations for awhile as they are both very good players. I also firmly
believe as per with the teams FLFP Owens plays on some/many of the Stamps
players would be getting annoyed with their antics. Coach Tom Higgins has said
publicly that he doesn't like the excessive TD celebrations.
Also how could the "Wally Lions coach running up the score" even be a topic of
conversation on TSN's Off The Record last night. You get a team down and hammer
them is always the case with Australian Rules Football but some how in a very
strange way over here in the sometimes "top polite Canada" some" people are
complaining when a team rubs another team into the dirt. What a load of rubbish.
I heard it earlier in the year as well, I think it was the Bombers complaining.
From Wed Oct 12 Wow! The 1st bit of CFL news that I see after getting
back from Vegas US/CDN Natl's of Aussie Footy is I see Wally has signed George
White. I'm surprised he wasn't picked up as soon as Stamps released him. I even
got to see the 1st half of the Lions vs the Stamps on West Jets TV on TSN.
Unreal technology, flying at approx 40,000 ft & watching being able to watch
many CDN TV stations live.
From my Total-CFL.com Discussion post last Friday.
I like Calgary Sports radio a lot! The "Coping with Nik" show on QR77 SportsTalk
is quite entertaining. Lewis has been good this year! Copeland, Hmmm definitely
not as good as Montreal days! They both have Huge mouths and Huge ego's I know
that! Have they backed it up this year, Lewis yes, Copeland not sure on that.
Geroy Simon Wow! MVP Big chance. His TD stance he does it because his boy likes
it. I like it too! It's not over the top but confident as he is a Champ! Lewis
says it's "Gay". Gay got bleeped from Off The Record.
TSN Off The Record show last week & Calgary Media reports this week Re Copeland
& Lewis vs Geroy Simon mouthing off at each other is Simon has possibly out
performed both of them put together this year!
I'm heading to Vegas Friday for US Natl's of Aussie Rules Footy with the Calgary
Kangaroo's to play & film against the US teams and Vancouver so it will be
interesting to see the CFL scores/betting up in Vegas. I presume I will. Go
Lions!

1,000's of excellent CDN Media people/advertisers etc. Advertising in 06 Grey Cup MYKwebTV shows will be great value! "The
real Cwoc Pamela Anderson in The Best 7 mins from Grey Cup 05 week!"
Opinion
has it that this could
my most watched show ever over the coming mths as the real Pamela is in it!
Includes
The Parade featuring the real Pamela Anderson, The BC Booze Brothers, many of the CFL cheerleaders,
CFL stars Ed
Hervey and Jason Clermont, Rider titty Cwoc, Wow!, Honest Mur, Bubbles The
Green Bastard, Moose, ScottyDog Total-CFLer and lots more great CFL wild fans.
