Henry
Burris's All-Star team defeat the Grey All-Star team 11-10 in the 8th innings in
a softball game last Saturday at the Seaman stadium in Okotoks! This game was part
of the Henry Burris All-Star weekend. These events raise money for the Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Calgary and Area organization.
Before a crowd of many kids at the Seaman baseball stadium in Okotoks the
Grey All-Star team came from behind to tie up the game in the 7th innings. In
the extra innings Henry's team scored and then struck out the Grey team to win
11-10.
Henry's All-Star team included of course Henry Burris, John Avery, Jarious
Jackson, Dave Dickenson, Jesse Lumsden, Jay McNeil, Jermaine Copeland, Ryan
Thelwell, Henry's dad, Pee Wee Smith, Cabbie from The Score TV, Godfrey Ellis,
Jeff Pilon, Joffrey Reynolds, Rob Cote, Brett Ralph and Derek Armstrong.
The Grey All-Star team included Damon Allen, Fred Perry, Jackie Kellogg,
Randy Chevrier, Eddie Davis, Justin Phillips, Marvin Pope, Burke Dales, Terrence
Patrick, Brian Clark, Ted Hellard, Mike Labinjoy, Trey Young, JR Ruffin, Will
Johnson and Pat McDonald.
These were the teams as listed in the program and I believe there were only
one or two listed above that did not play.
I had to rip into Dave Dickenson as he ran to 1st base but was just ran out.
So I yelled out "Dave you're too slow". He looks up and yells back
"Myk Aussie" and with a look on his somewhat knowing he knew I would
rip into him a bit for leaving the Lions. I'm a huge BC Lion fan as many CFL fans know and Dave
has left the Lions this year to return to the Stamps.
Many of the CFL players could hit the ball very well but Cabbie from The Score
TV hit it as far as any of them. Many of the kids there got the chance to chat
with the star players and get autographs. It was a fun time.
TotalCFLwebTV as I'm 1
on 1 with Jesse Lumsden the Canadian Hamilton Tiger-Cats star running back!
One of the main reasons
I went to the event was to interview Jesse Lumsden the star Canadian Hamilton
Tiger-Cats running back. I believe if Jesse can stay healthy he could end up
being one of the great Canadian CFL players in a position that is dominated by
USA running backs. This 5 minute interview coming soon to TotalCFLwebTV. Here is

It was
excellent coverage of the CFL draft on tsn.ca according to Great White North
a longtime TotalCFLer!
I was a little disappointed to see the coverage end after the
first two rounds but other than that I was absolutely thrilled with the job that
TSN did with the draft. For those of you that weren't able to take it in online,
they had the normal football panel analyzing the picks and talking about team
needs as well as a panel of Farhan Lalji, Duane Forde, Brian Towriss and Greg
Marshall providing additional analysis and commentary.
They also had Commissioner Cohon in studio announcing the picks at a podium. The
show was given every bit of big-league look that TSN provides to their NHL
coverage, and it featured phone interviews with GMs and draft picks along the
way. If this is any reflection on the way that TSN will be treating the CFL
product now that it has exclusivity, I'm entirely optimistic that we will all be
happy with the output!" Great White North.

CFL MVP Kerry Joseph traded to the Toronto Argonauts was huge news recently! Below
is the discussion from the Total-CFL.com Discussion!
“Joseph trade in the works. Popular Roughriders quarterback may
soon be a member of the Argonauts “ Eskinator
“Confirmed - Joseph to the Argos for OT Glen January, DE Ronald
Flemons and a draft pick. WTF ??? - trading away the league MOP and a guy who
helps take you to a GC win for a couple of spare parts / unproven guys and a
draft pick (might help some if it's a first rounder, not sure about what pick it
is) ??? And if this is rationalized by SMS "concerns", it
doesn't look good IMO - not good for the league to see top players flitting
around from team to team for whatever reason - players becoming a big part of a
TEAM and fan favorites who were big in the community was a feature of CFL past.
Go ahead and 'splain it away though as a "reality" of modern day
sports - whatever - garbage i says. And Tillman got
hosed/fleeced/ripped-off big time on this one; even if Joseph HAD to move
on for whatever reason (maybe Tillman got quite upset/annoyed with Kerry's
contract demands and attitude?) - the Riders should have been able to get much,
much more in return value in this trade. (Dunigan was a quite a bit better
QB than Joseph IMO, but when the Argos traded with BC for him back around the
same date in 1990, Dunigan had not just come off winning a GC and the MOP award
AND the Argos had to give up a boat load of players for him - including a guy by
the name of Willie Pless). “OV Bandit
“I've heard that the draft pick is a first rounder this year, and
a second rounder in 2010. The package of compensation seems light to me as
well, but it's not exactly a seller's market for QBs. Edmonton, BC and
Calgary have their situations set. Hamilton with Printers and a promising
backup in Ritchie Williams, is pretty content, Montreal with Calvillo and Brady
is likely looking more forward than a 34 year old, and Winnipeg's still got the
option year with Glenn, a younger guy than Joseph with the same kind of salary
expectations. I was surprised that Toronto was interested in him for that
matter.
I'll defend Tillman to the extent that it needs to be acknowledged
that he inherited the contract mess from the previous regime as it relates to
the SMS. At the same time, this is his second off-season to get things in
line... last one seemed more a culling of the aging (Nate Davis types) and using
the front-loading window to delay some of the tough decisions until this year.
Well, that appears to have come home to roost in a big way. He had
to know that Joseph would be looking to recoup some of the paycut that he took
last year after the success that he had, but it doesn't seem to have been
factored into the budget. Whether Tillman had a hard line and hoped that
Joseph would continue to be the "team" guy or whether this
demonstrates a lack of planning, it certainly puts a big question mark on the
Riders going into the season.
There is certainly the possibility that Tillman still has another
deal in the works too, but other than taking a flyer on the upside potential of
Bishop coming back in this deal, I'm trying to think of a dance partner that
makes sense for him... and not coming up with anything.
Personally, I'm not sure that I can reconcile putting Joseph in the upper
echelon at the position. I think Glenn showed that he belonged last year,
and Ray, Dickenson (when healthy) have the credentials. Burris can play at
that level but hasn't sustained it, Calvillo's played there and has to get back
to it, and Printers perhaps just needs to prove that it wasn't lightning in a
bottle. Despite the MOP award, and in writing this I understand that it
may be my own bias, I don't see Kerry Joseph in the same category as the others,
and aside from perhaps Calvillo, I believe he's also the oldest of the bunch.”
GreatWhiteNorth
“Joseph has been puzzling in his first 4 years. Last year he put
it together for the whole season which coincidentally was his first healthy
season in the league. Prior to that I thought he showed capable of performing as
he did in 2007 but it always seemed to unravel with an injury. He'd come back
from the injury to finish the season but it was like he was a totally different
player. He'd be like a perennial elite QB before injury and a journeyman back up
after.” Hambone
“There are some differences between the Joseph
deal and that Dunigan deal. I don't recall if Dunigan was dealt for money
reasons or not. It's hard to figure out as that was during the Pezim reign of
error. Of course there was no SMS then. Cap induced trades will always erode
diminish the level of talent a team can expect to receive in return. Joseph is
34 compared to Dunigan who was 30 back then. Dunigan didn't have any awards to
show for his final year in BC, but had led the CFL in most passing categories
while chipping in 10 TDs rushing prior to the trade. Hey! Khari Jones won an MVP
too, but that didn't help his trade value later.
As for comparing the trades I'd say the Riders already stand to have
more to show for Joseph this time next year than the Lions had to show for
Dunigan a year after his trade. The "boatload of players" that the
Argos gave up was basically Pless and a bunch of broken oars. Pless was the only
player to do anything meaningful as a Lion and he left as a free-agent after 1
season, albeit an outstanding one. Rick Johnson and Todd Wiseman never played
for BC. Tony Visco was traded after 12 games for Dan Payne who would play 3
games before being released in the offseason. Emanuel Tolbert's BC career would
last a mediocre 7 games. Jerald Baylis retired in 1990 due to injury but did
come back the following year for 7 games before being cut. Within 18 months of
the Dunigan trade the Lions had jack-diddly-squat to show for it. Even if
January and Flemons don't help in Saskatchewan at least the Riders should have
the benefits of the two draft picks this time next year which is more than BC
could say for the Dunigan trade.
But you're correct. I'm not sure what this says about the SMS. Then
again I've said right from the day it was announced that it will generate a lot
more movement of older veteran players than fans are accustomed to or care for.
Having said that I would've thought if anyone would be exempt from that it would
be veteran starting QBs. After the big cut Joseph took last year Tillman had to
know he'd come back looking to recoup some after the Grey Cup win. Should be
interesting to see how the Riders do trying to repeat with Marcus Crandell at
the helm. Then again with Kevin Glenn seemingly in a contract dispute in
Winnipeg we may not yet have seen the end of the QB carousel this offseason. I
suppose if anything I'm surprised Bishop wasn't part of the package for Joseph.
I wonder what he's thinking right now? Definitely can't be pleased.” Hambone
"I suppose if anything I'm surprised Bishop wasn't part of the
package for Joseph. I wonder what he's thinking right now? Definitely can't be
pleased." Actually, Bishop is being a true professional as he has today
signed a contract extension with the Argos through 2010 and said to the media
today that he is prepared to be a backup again if he has to as all he is
concerned about is the team winning games. Michael Bishop is not only a
solid QB but a class act as well!” Ravi Ramkissoonsingh
“Kerry Joseph is set to appear on "Off
the Record" on TSN this afternoon. Agreed that Bishop is taking this well
publically, though I'd figure it has to hurt a little. He's faced it
before and probably matured from the process, and he'll need to employ those
lessons in approaching the competition this year. There's also something
to be said for needing the two QB system, and he needs look no further than his
season last year and the freefall the team experienced while he was on the
shelf. Nice to see that kind of team guy approach to the game... even if it is
somewhat of a brave face.” GreatWhiteNorth
“You can't seriously believe the compensation the Riders just got
for Joseph is anywhere close to what BC received for Dunigan ???; too bad
for BC that they didn't retain those players or get lots of use out of them, but
that's there problem/fault - they could have signed Wille Pless long-term - one
of the all-time greatest D players in CFL history - but they let him get away;
and pretty well all the other players in that deal were decent to very
good CFL players - Baylis ended up playing and being a good defender for the 2
straight GC appearence Stallions ; Wiseman & Visco (a former 1st round
draft pick) were capable players IMO; Tolbert was an experienced vet;
Johnson had shown some stuff and won some games as a starting QB in the
league. The Riders just got an inexperienced O-lineman who hasn't
started a whole CFL season and a back-up DE who hasn't been able to make the
Argos starting D except for getting in as an injury replacement a bit; they
better hope that with the 1st round draft pick Tillman comes up with a Lumsden
or Fantuz type talent (and Tillspin's drafting history does not bode well there
- he's been oft clueless IMO). The draft pick plus both January and
Flemons might all end up being long-term top starters for the Riders - that
would be nice; and Joseph might fade fast and do little for the Argos,
while Crandell or one of the young QBs might lead the Riders to another GC -
Tillspin better hope as trading away a GC hero QB who's also a really nice guy,
well liked in the city does not often go over to well with too many fans. We
shall see.” OV Bandit
“Mike, I second your WTF. I
can't make sense of this at all. What about Bishop? So the Riders cast off a fan
favourite and MOP? Seems shoddy. Kerry did his bit by playing for less, but also
proved his worth and was rewarded with the above mentioned MOP. He did deserve a
raise. How much? I don't know. Still scratching my head about this one.”
Eskinator.
“I'm a little surprised by this, but not that much. Even with
Miller taking over as Head Coach, I wondered if Khari Jose-, er Kerry Joseph
could be the same QB. Was he an elite QB? He did well. His legs helped him
immensely. A couple untimely drops early in the 2007 Grey Cup hurt his
confidence a lot in that game. A lot of Rider fans liked Joseph, but they didn't
know which QB would show up in many of the games.
I guess I'll wait and see. I'm surprised that nobody has really
talked about who will be starting in Saskatchewan. Crandell's getting a bit old
- his Grey Cup win over the Bombers was just over six years ago. I hope he does
well in Toronto, but I don't know if the coaching will fit him. Austin was a
great QB coach and knew how to bring the best out of that position.”
Saskfan in Winnipeg
“I have to believe that the Riders' starter isn't yet on the
roster. If he is, I'd have some rather serious reservations. As you
suggest, Crandell is fairly far removed from his success, and other than that
one season has been fairly journeymanish... perhaps he's learned enough while
biding his time to surprise, but I think it would truly be a surprise to most of
us.
The young group likely has some talent, but it's a lot to ask to get
someone that green (pardon the bad pun) to step in and lead a team.
I get a bit of a feeling that last year was somewhat of a perfect storm for the
Riders... they developed the needed depth by having some mid-season injuries,
they had Joseph perform at the top of his game more than he had previously, and
they were able to keep together more of the team that the previous regime had
been building because of the front-loading window. Add to that, the
inspiration gained from Austin's style and his return to Regina and the result
was everything that a Rider fan could've hoped for.
And then midnight strikes.
Hunt... gone. Perry... gone. Austin... gone. Joseph... gone.
Holmes... gone. Alright, the last one is more of an emotional move,
rather than one that will likely wound them on the field, but all the same,
indicative about the difference between last year and this year. Most of
the players exiting have brought back some return, but it's not exactly all-star
caliber and much of it is geared towards the future... the kind of moves
expected of re-building teams, not one trying to stay on top.
Ladies and gentlemen, led by number 15, Nealon Greene, your defending Grey Cup
champions, the 2008 Saskatchewan Roughriders! Got a ring to it, eh? :)”
GreatWhiteNorth
"I have to believe that the Riders' starter isn't yet on the
roster." It sure seems as though they are hitching their wagon to Crandell.
Who else are they going to get at this point? “ Ravi Ramkissoonsingh
“That's the big question I guess. If
they're not willing or able to pay a starter $325K+ at this point, then it
limits some of the options in terms of making a trade for a guy like Dickenson.
The only guy out there that I would think is a sure-fire starter
(but isn't) is Buck Pierce, and I believe he comes relatively affordable (under
$200K) if they could find a package to entice BC to move him. With that
said, I'm not sure that BC has any real gaping holes and certainly has come to
appreciate the importance of QB depth.
I don't know if Tillman has an ace up his sleeve, whether he's got
his eye on a former NFLer or an NCAA stud or whether he's hitching his cart to
Crandell. I'd expect that most GMs and fans in the league wouldn't be all
that comfortable with that set of choices facing them.” GreatWhiteNorth
“Apparently the new Rider HC likes Crandell more than Joseph.
Also. This could be Mr Chia Pets plan to get rid of all the "Roy" guys
and show he can do it all himself. (Which he has never done)” Argonut
"Ladies and gentlemen, led by number 15,
Nealon Greene, your defending Grey Cup champions, the 2008 Saskatchewan
Roughriders! Got a ring to it, eh? :) "
Why is it when I read that statement that I couldn't help but
noticing a haunting similarity to another Total-CFL'ism. Just like Argonut has
Wayne Lammle it seems GWN has Nealon Greene. ;-)” Hambone
“I liked him once upon a time, but that was a
long while back. They just don't jump in the boat like they used to... I
thought I'd at least get a nibble from GITC.” GreatWhiteNorth
”Just not jumping in the boat like they used to, eh Paul? ;-) Can't say that
I'm thrilled with the Joseph deal but neither am I all that upset. This
has been rumoured for some time now and it just came to fruition. I guess
it not being a surprise probably softens the blow.
There's certainly a lot of emphasis being put on Austin's tutelage
of Joseph last year and the system that he employed. With Kenny Miller
providing some continuity the Riders have some quarterbacks that
"played" under that system last year so there should be some level of
comfort in that.
Let's look at Crandell's career after his GC MVP in '01. He
immediately got drug into the Feterik/Fateri circus and suffered under new
systems and new offensive coordinators for a few years, not to mention getting
caught up in the "Play my son" garbage. He didn't have great
success nor was he given much chance to succeed.
Tillman's mantra has been that Marcus is actually the more accurate of the
quarterbacks, in comparison to Joseph, and a better game manager. What one
might gain on that side of it, one loses in his scrambling ability or lack
thereof.
Tillman and the coaches are quite high on a couple of the guys that
have been on the roster for a few years now, Tate and Durant, and with the
acquisition of Jyles and a potential signing of Ben Mauk there's a lot of talk
towards grooming the QB of the future. Both Joseph and Crandell are in
that 34 year old range and weren't going to be around much longer in any event
so a new guy needs to emerge. He needs to emerge quicker now but that was
apparently part of thinking or so we're led to believe. I'm not convinced
that Tillman is done dealing but not sure where else he might be looking. Pretty
sure at the end of the day that Nealon Greene will not be re-emerging. Sorry,
Paul.“ Green IS The Colour
“Some added depth. It'll be interesting to see who gets the starting
positions. Both are great at both of their jobs--QB and running back.“

07 CFL MVP
Kerry Joseph traded to the Toronto Argonauts was huge news this week! The Riders
can go Back to Back especially if Michael Vick arrives in Regina to be the new
starting QB in a few mths.
It was a shock top many when Eric Tilman the Riders boss traded Kery Joseph to
the Argonauts this week. Maybe he's wanting to get Michael Vick this season as
the stating QB.
Vick could play in the CFL this season after getting out of jail and "not" being
suspended further by Roger Goodell. He would probably play for less than Joseph
just to get fit again and in NFL game shape. Then after he helps win the 08 Grey
Cup for the Riders he will go back to the NFL to be back up somewhere from the
end of November till end of January.
What a great
fit Vick would be at the Riders, in a way similar to Joseph, a great running
back style QB and a good but many say not a great passer.
Then when the
CFL finally get their act 100% together and start the CFL season 2 mths earlier
especially with the Bills coming Vick can play again for the Riders in 09 and
then get in a full NFL season as well after that.
Vick has done
enough time in US prison I believe. Yeh I don't agree with what he did in
killing the dogs but there are way more US people done way worse and served no
or little time.
Now I would
move to Regina to watch this every week. One of the most exciting NFL players
ever to watch I believe would be great in the CFL with his style of play and the
CFL rules. Now we need to watch as I believe Vick should/will get released
sooner than expected from US prison. I'm hoping Roger doesn't suspend him with
the new CFL Ricky Williams rule in place. Imagine the huge publicity the CFL
would get in the USA this season with Vick playing here. Now that's a good
thing.
